Lille was occupied by the Germans starting on the 13th of October, 1914. This was following a 10-day siege with lots of heavy shelling, which destroyed over 2,300 buildings. It was regularly used by the Germans for hospitalization, and also for the enjoyment of the soldiers, due to how close it was to the battlefield. 
Lille was reclaimed by the Allies over 4 years later, on October 17th, 1918. 
  • During The Great Depression, over a third of the city’s population lived in poverty.

Lille was attacked by German forces for multiple days during the Battle of France, and it was part of the zone under the control of the German commander in Brussels. The city was eventually liberated at the beginning of September 1944, when the Germans left out of fear of the British force that was on their way. Lille eventually returned to normal in 1948.

There are also museums with modern art if that’s what you’re interested in. There’s also a flea market on the first weekend of every September, where 100 kilometers are transformed into an open-air market. It’s called the Braderie de Lille, and it attracts over two million visitors to the city every year! There’s also a Christmas market, that is definitely not to be missed.
