The process by which people breathe is that the rib muscles contracts, lifting the wall upward and outward and at the same time the diaphragm contracts downward. This makes the lungs have a space cavity then you take air in and breathe. When there is no extra air, the air pressure decreases. Because of the difference in air pressure, air rushes into your chest.

There are many different types of diseases that affect the respiratory system. For example, lung cancer is caused by smoking. Tumors grow and limit the amount of space for gas exchange. Also, emphysema is the destruction of enlargement air sacs, or alveoli. Both diseases end up making people have to use devices to help breathe.

The following structures are the ones that air passes through to get to the lungs:
Nose- Air enters through the nostrils. The lining, cilia and mucus, trap particles that could be allergens.
Pharynx- Air moves downward into the pharynx. (This is also known as the throat)
Trachea- Leads air to the lungs. (This is also known as the windpipe)
Epliglottis- Air passes through the epiglottis. This is a flap of tissue that seals off the windpipe.
Larynx- Air passes through the larynx. (This is also known as the voice box)
Bronchi- Leads the air into the lungs. They are little passageways that branch off into smaller tubes called bronchioles.
Lungs- Filter the air and only take the oxygen.
Alveoli- Tiny air sacs that oxygen passes through in order to get into the bloodstream.
