They're many rumors of Gatsby's past. His true history gets told to Jordan and Nick. One example is how his name isn't even Jay Gatsby. His name is James Gatz and he was born in North Dakota. The two reasons he wanted to developed his wealth was because he saw the lifestyle of Dan Cody and he wanted to win the love of Daisy. He met Daisy before he left for the military. She promised to wait for him but married Tom instead. Throughout the book Gatsby throws his parties to show off for Daisy.

Sadly not all characters make it through the book. Daisy ran over Myrtle when she was in the care with Gatsby. This caused Wilson to snap. He went after Myrtle's secret lover. Sadly, he got the wrong guy. He thought Myrtle's lover was Gatsby and shot him while he was in his pool. Then Wilson shot himself after shooting Gastby. After Gatsby's death, Nick broke up with Jordan moved out of West Egg.

West Egg against East Egg

East Egg is the home of Tom and Daisy. West Egg is then the home of Nick and Jay. East Egg is more of handed down money. West Egg is self-made money. East Egg tends to look down West Egg like it's dirty money. For example: "I lived at West Egg---well, the less fashionable of the two, though this a most superficial tag to express the bizarre and not a little sinister contrast between them" (Pg 5).
