The film viewer is never truly a passive participant, but rather chooses how they view the film, be that in a very straightforward, non-analytical way, or through deeper examination.

thompson's main point is that film studies in academia have definitely transitioned and that are becoming more culturally intertwined.

Watching is innate, we watch life, life is like a movie, movies are technically entertainment but we get a lot out of just watching. We innately perceive and respond to film form which affects our experience of watching

I think Thompson’s main point is to not look at watching movies as something that is merely fun or for our entertainment (although it defiantly can be those things) but film can be so much more as it can be a form to spread the truth of history or what is happening in the present and vice versa— a potential form to spread lies and manipulate people. Regardless of either of these things, when we watch film, if we watch ourselves watch the film we can then takeaway so much more then just entertainment from films.

The main point, as I understood, in David Thompson’s passage was that a film/story is a guided venture and is not one that can’t just be assumed to happen without stimulus provided for the viewer. Sometimes that is sounds, or lack of it, sometimes that is guided by changes perspectives and sometimes is something as simple a dimming the lights to convey mood.

Thompson argues that the definition of a film has changed and evolved compared to 50 or 60 years ago. People no longer watch films solely for fun or entertainment but watch movies because they now serve a greater meaning and purpose. Films are now impactful in delivering messages about society, the world or pertaining issues because of the elements of storylines, lights, sounds effects etc
