Studying VAP, risks, preventive measures in a controlled study is TS. EBP is instituting it into practice and continuing to evaluate its effectiveness and if changes might be needed. EBP has shown that utilizing CHG wipes and a foam cleanser to the catheter tubing has reduced CAUTI and is now a part of the CAUTI bundle in many facilities. Prior to the initiation of this standard, translational science was utilized to determine the best intervention in preventing CAUTI. Interventions such as CHG wipes, foam cleansers, securing devices, external catheters and assessment of catheter says was all analyzed to create a bundle for CAUTI prevention. For dissemination - translational methods were utilized to include education via classes and online learning modules, chart audits, and checklists to determine implementation and compliance.

I have many patients who are suffering from heart disease secondary to meth abuse. Sadly, medication assisted treatment for meth use is still being studied. A fairly recent study showed that injectable naltrexone (Vivitrol) AND Wellbutrin combined was effective for assisting patients with methamphetamine cessation. Implementing this into our clinic would be evidence based practice (EBP).  The ADAPT-2 study conducted from from 2017 to 2019 at nationwide community treatment programs with 403 adult volunteers ages 18 to 65 years with moderate to severe methamphetamine use disorder. This study is the translation science (TS) piece. Educating providers on this treatment plan as well as moving forward with our screening for meth use would be translation methods (TM). At our community health clinic we screen individuals for substance abuse which would be a first step in a method to implement a treatment plan. We then have behavioral health clinicians assess the patient and then as a provider I can make an individualized plan for treatment- including same day vivitrol injection (if liver enzymes are within normal limits) as well as Wellbutrin RX. EBP: Based on the STOP-IT trial, once there is source control from an infective source (like a perforated gallbladder that has been removed), we treat with 4+1 days of antibiotics.

Translational science: the STOP-IT trial looked at patients with complicated intraabdominal infections and tested 14 days vs 5 days of antibiotics after source control was achieved

Translational methods: Disseminating the information to providers about the lack of need for extended antibiotics once source control is surgically achieved
