Analyze the relationship between Amir and his father

In the beginning of the book, Amir seems to be jealous of all the attention that Hassan receives from Baba. For Hassan's birthday, Baba hired a surgeon to fix Hassan's cleft lip. Amir said, "I wished I too had some kind of scar that would beget Baba's sympathy. It wasn't fair. Hassan hadn't done anything to earn Baba's affection; he'd just been born with that stupid harelip" (pg. 46). In this scene, Amir is jealous that Baba is giving more attention to Hassan. Amir wished that he had a scare so that he could get the same attention from Baba.

Baba and Amir were talking about the upcoming kite running competition when Baba said, " I think maybe you'll win the tournament this year. What do you think? I didn't know what to think. Or what to say. Was that what it would take?" (pg. 56) Had he just slipped me a key" Amir replayed Baba's comment over and over. Amir wanted to win the competition so that he could win over Baba. Amir would do anything to have Baba's affection.

When Amir won the kite competition, he saw: "Baba was on our roof. He was standing on the edge, pumping both of his fists. Hollering and clapping. And that there was the single greatest moment of my twelve years of life, seeing Baba on that roof, proud of me at last" (pg. 66). In this scene, Amir feels that he has finally made his father proud. Amir had achieved the goal that he was striving for. All Amir wanted to do was make his father proud.

When Baba and Amir went to Jalalabad, Amir said, "Baba and I were finally friends" (pg. 85). Before this scene, Amir felt that he and his father were not close. Amir felt that he and his father were finally in a good place.

When Baba and Amir were gardening Amir asked Baba if he had thought about getting new servants. Baba was angry and said, "I grew up with Ali. My father took him in, he loved Ali like his own son. Forty years Ali's been with my family. Forty goddamn years. And you think I'm just going to throw him out? You bring me shame. And Hassan ... Hassan's not going anywhere" (pg. 89-90). Baba was very angry with Amir. Amir had seen Hassan get raped and there was tension between them. Amir wanted to get rid of Hassan so he would not have to deal with seeing Hassan and feeling guilty.

When it was time for "giving word"ceremony, Baba was dying. Baba was talking to Amir and said, "You look khoshteep, Handsome. Amir was making sure that his father was feeling ok for the ceremony and Baba replied, "Up to this, It's the happiest day of my life, Amir" (pg. 166). Amir knew that he made his father happy.

Toward the beginning of the book, Baba seemed like he favored Hassan. Baba seemed to show little affection toward Amir. Baba only seemed to show affection to Amir when he did something good such as winning the kite competition. Baba only seemed interested in Amir when he made Baba proud. When Baba got sick , I think the relationship between Baba and Amir got stronger. When Baba was sick Amir and his wife, Soraya, took care of him. I feel that Baba getting sick helped strengthen the relationship between Amir and Baba.

Why I chose this background?

I chose this background for my project because I feel that The Kite Runner takes the reader all around the world. For example, the story begins in Kabul, Afghanistan. In the novel, the reader is taken through different cities in Afghanistan. The reader is taken through cities such as:
Mazar-I-Sharif, Hazarajat, Jalalabad, and Peshawar. Amir gets away from Afghanistan and moves to America. Amir and his wife, Soraya, live together in San Francisco, California. Amir gets far away from Afghanistan. The novel travels from Afghanistan to America.

The Kite Runner is a book about a boy named Amir and his friend Hassan who are from Afghanistan. Amir and Hassan grew up together because Amir's father, Baba, and Hassan's father, Ali, grew up together. Baba and Amir are considered wealthy in Kabul while Ali and Hassan are not. Ali and Hassan are Hazaras which are considered the lower class of Kabul. Even though, Ali is Baba's servant, Baba treats Ali and Hassan like family.

Living in Afghanistan was great for Amir until the Talibans took over. Once the Talibans took over the city of Kabul, Kabul was never the same. Amir and his father had to flee the city of Kabul and relocate. Buildings that Amir and Hassan admired as kids were no longer recognizable. When Amir was driving through the city he said, "I feel like a tourist in my own country" (pg. 231).

In the book, Amir experiences heartbreak, tragedy, and fear. Amir experiences heartbreak through the death of his father and the death of Rahim Khan. Amir had lost two people who truly mattered to him.

Amir experienced tragedy when he was attacked by Assef. Assef had beaten up Amir to the point that Amir had to be hospitalized. Amir experiences fear when he sees his best friend, Hassan, raped by their childhood enemy. The Kite Runner takes the reader through a rollercoaster of emotions.

The Main Characters:

The main characters in novel are Amir, Baba, Ali, Hassan, Rahim Khan, Soraya, and Sohrab. Amir is the protagonist in The Kite Runner. Amir is the son of Baba. Baba is the father of Amir. Baba is well-known around the city of Kabul. When Baba passed away from cancer, many people were devastated. Ali is the "father" of Hassan.

Ali is infertile and is not able to have children. Baba was the father of Hassan, but the children were never told because of their social classes. Once Amir was years older, he was told by Rahim Khan that Hassan was his half brother. Hassan died before anyone had the chance to tell him that Amir was his half brother.

Hassan is the "son" of Ali. According to Amir, Hassan had: "a perfectly round face, a face like a Chinese doll chiseled from hardwood: his flat, broad nose, and slanting, narrow eyes like bamboo leaves, eyes that looked, depending on the light, gold, green, even sapphire. And the cleft lip, just left of the midline, where the Chinese doll maker's instrument may have slipped, or perhaps he had simply grown tired and careless" (pg. 3). Amir compared Hassan to a Chinese doll.

Rahim Khan is Baba's best friend and business partner. Amir was always close to Rahim Khan. Amir was upset when he found out that Rahim Khan left Afghanistan. Rahim Khan was also sick and was on the verge of dying.

Soraya is Amir's wife. When Amir saw Soraya, he noticed: "a brown, sickle-shaped birthmark on the smooth skin just above her left jawline" (pg. 140). Soraya and Amir tried to have a child, but Soraya was not able to have children so they tried to adopt Sohrab.

Sohrab is the son of Hassan. Hassan and his wife were killed and Sohrab was put into an orphanage. Amir went to adopt Sohrab as his own and was having trouble with the adoption process. Amir told Sohrab that he would have to put him in an orphanage until Amir was able to adopt him. When Sohrab found out about this, Sohrab tried to commit suicide by cutting his wrists. In the end, Amir and Soraya were able to adopt Sohrab as their own son.

I truly enjoyed this book. I originally was not looking forward to reading this book because it was over three hundred pages. Once I started reading the book, I could not stop. The Kite Runner is now my favorite book. I did not expect The Kite Runner to be as interesting as it was. I would definitely recommend The Kite Runner to others. I enjoyed this assignment!

Amir and his father's relationship compared to my relationship with my father

I think that Amir's relationship with his father is different from my relationship with my father. I do have a mom unlike Amir, but I am much closer with my dad. My dad is my partner in crime. My dad and I do things that my mom would not be happy with and both promise not to tell her. I have always been daddy's girl. I think that Amir is trying his hardest to impress his dad and do great things so his dad will be proud of him. My dad is proud of me no matter what. My dad supports me in everything that I do. I feel that there is a strain in Amir and his father's relationship.
