Graphic Novels are, “narratives told in comic book style” ("Graphic Novels"). Will Eisner, the person who came up with the term ‘graphic novel’, used the term first in 1978 to describe his book A Contract with God. He described graphic novels as pictures that when the reader looked at them in order, they told a story ("Graphic Novels"). According to Jeff Smith, the creator of the famous comic book Bones, “although today’s graphic novels are a recent phenomenon, this basic way of storytelling has been used in various forms for centuries — early cave drawings, hieroglyphics, and medieval tapestries like the famous Bayeux Tapestry can be thought of as stories told in pictures (Smith in "Graphic Novels").

Another famous type of graphic novels are Manga which translates to ‘whimsical drawings’ ("Graphic Novels"). Manga books are Japanese comics and they are often read in reverse order than English books. They are also known to be, usually, in black and white ("Graphic Novels"). “Manga differs from American-style graphic novels in both the storytelling techniques it applies, such as wordless panels, and in the subject matter with each book closely targeted at a specific demographic" ("Graphic Novels").

Graphic Novels are great for anybody especially for people that speak languages other than English and for people that are not that good at reading ("Graphic Novels"). Graphic novels help and creates this love for reading by combining oral and visual literacy. People that do not think they will like reading and don’t want to explore the library are usually attached to graphic novels because they are appealing to look at and mostly easy and fast to read ("Graphic Novels"). According to Kristin Flecher- Speaer, Merideth Jenson- Benjamin, and Teresa Copland, authors The Truth about Graphic Novels, “They lure teen boys, while retaining the qualities beloved by teen girls. They work for ESL students, teach visual literacy and sequencing, and, above all else, they are wildly popular with an adolescent audience” (Copeland, Flether- Spear, and Jenson- Benjamin in "Graphic Novels").

Picture books has been defined as, “a book, typically for children, in which the illustrations are as important as—or more important than—the words in telling the story” (Kennedy). The structure of a picture book is that there is either a picture on every page, or there is a single picture on every pair of facing pages (Kennedy). Even though most picture books are written for children, there are many picture books that have been published for older elementary and even middle schoolers. The definition of picture books has expanded from “children picture books” and different categories of picture books (Kennedy).

Adventure is important to have in our world for several reasons. One of the reasons is because they have heroes that go through different obstacles and journeys which is, according to theorist Joseph Campbell, “is a universal story about the psychological growth of human beings” (Campbell in "Adventure: Definitions and Examples"). That is mainly why these stories, adventure stories, are revolved around self-discovery for the main character or protagonist. “Mythological stories are also usually adventures and as we have all heard, mythology is the way ancient cultures explained their world and their beliefs” ("Adventure: Definitions and Examples"). The final reason why adventure books are important for humanity is because it’s a way for people to get out of the real world and enjoy ‘the wild life’ of mystery and adventure and discovery. “Adventure is food for the imagination, one of our most important forms of intelligence” ("Adventure: Definitions and Examples").
