Goals are clear and relevant in the context of the course. Building up academic mathematical language is often ignored or a little part of the learning process. However, clarifying terms would enhance conceptual learning and mathematical literacy.

Generally prior knowledge is assumed knowledge and not worked on, maybe done with a brief revision, merely because of the pressure to cover the content. But, activating background knowledge of academic language and understanding concepts related to analysis of graphs would be rewarding when introducing new content on the topic.

Method: I use a similar method when I want to focus on background information and terminology. I give mini-whiteboards to pairs and ask them to discuss what they can remember on the topic, and then have the pairs share their finding while I underline/summarize what they remembered. Using the last sticky notes part, I liked the most, since it provides the teacher with more insight into students prior knowledge.
