Have worked alongside and supported 1st year students during my role as an assistant practitioner over the past 5 years. They definitely benefit from 3rd year student support, more empathic as they have been in the same situation recently. New students may feel more comfortable approaching fellow students for advice. Have more time to spend explaining things as radiographers can be busy.
 3. Majority of students are very enthusiatic, keen to learn and great with the patients. A select few can act completely disinterested and introverted and could benefit from additional support.
4. Excellent support for students in our department, staff are preceptorship trained, have regular training updates and are aware of the students objectives.
5. Staff benefits- job satisfaction, CPD,  training, builds confidence, confirmation of own knowledge.
6.Benefits for patients- students have more time to spend with the patients. Confidence that future radiographers are being trained well.

I remember how it felt to be a new student and what difference it made when a member of staff was friendly. I think they will have benefitted from having somebody within the department who they could turn to if they had any questions.
The first years did respond well to our approach. I only had to amend my style slightly because the student I worked alongside was very competent and eager to get involved at a point where I expected her to just wanted to observe
A couple of the students suprised me with how confident they were and with some of the very relevant questions that asked.
I feel the support system is generally good but I have often come across staff who are unhelpful. We do have mentors assigned to students but they can often be moved around and not be with the student for the whole time.
Student are generally helpful on a the machines as they are an extra pair of hands. Confident students are more helpful because they are more willing to take on tasks. 
Patients should benefit from the mentoring scheme because the students are likely to be more comfortable and learn quicker, making the team work more smoothly.
I believe that some time should be spent with the student as they begin a placement, asking where they are up to, getting to know a bit about them and finding out what they would like to concentrate on. Far too often these simple things aren't done.

Able to ask questions too nervous to ask qualified staff. E.g. Breaks, how the queue works, how we get patients into the changing room and when etc.

On the first day of a placement students are encouraged to fill in an acetate form which includes learning outcomes for the week, mentors, appointments, half days etc. This allows the staff to know what approach to take with that student to a certain extent.

think they heavily benefited from having us. We helped orientate the first years. Got them a skin marker. Helped them, call a patient round for the first time. Explained the handset. How to move the bed. Went through a case report with them. Explained the timesheet.
