One of the few active volcanoes in continental Europe is Mount Vesuvius, which is situated 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) southeast of Naples, Italy. It is a component of the Campanian Volcanic Arc, which also includes Mount Etna in Sicily and the Campi Flegrei caldera/geothermal zone west of Naples close to Agnano.

 
Size and elevation:
Vesuvius stood 1,281 meters (4,203 ft) tall in 2013. The size of the cone alters after each eruption, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. Mount Somma, a semicircular crest on the volcano, is 3,714 feet high (1,132 m).

The only active volcano on the European mainland is Mount Vesuvius. The most recent eruption, which was also its last significant one, occurred in 1631. 700,000 people live in the "death zones" surrounding Vesuvius, and another eruption is predicted to occur soon.
