The questioning pushed their thinking to back up their answers while also eliminating incorrect answers. I loved the fact that students felt comfortable pushing back during conversation and were able to use evidence from the text to back up their arguments. I liked how Mr. M reiterated "why do you believe that," to push them further. Ss are clearly comfortable with using their strategies, as evidenced when they referred back to the text, and elaborated on a peer's response. "I disagree, but..."

I was impressed that the students were involved in that level of discourse.  The students were able to go back in the text and cite evidence and defend their responses.

To push their thinking even further, maybe ask the students to restate others answers. Also, push all students to participate.

I especially enjoyed the feed back session. Teachers should take those strategies and incorporate them in their teaching. I appreciated how the students were able to converse about the their answer choices and justify why their choices were correct or incorrect.          Students not only referred back to the text to provide a rationale for their Part A answer, but also looked for clues/important words in the questions and answer choices  in order to choose the best option and match in Part B.

The questions posed to push the students thinking was thoughtful and encouraged the students to go beyond the "easy" answer.  There was also a good use of wait time for students to grapple with the ideas of how his/her answer supported their thinking. 

I am am also left wondering how we can capitalize on the students who seem to have that deeper level of thinking and analysis in a way to support the students who are quieter or not as clear in their ability to express why they choose the answers they do.  Maybe having students paraphrase another students thinking?  This is something I am encountering myself and wonder if others may be too?

In the first video I could see that students were embodying and applying strategies that they had been taught.  The students were able to productively struggle and work through the process of finding the answer.

The approach in this video was metacognitive strategies through guided discourse and I think this is a great strategy for our 'almost there' students or 'on the the right track students' who are able and willing to productively struggle, but  I question whether this approach would be as impactful for students who are 'lost' when it comes to this type of question.  I think these students might need explicit modeling and think alouds of metacognitive strategies rather than guided discourse.
