According to my mother, I was already forming sentences and having conversations by the age of 3. I grew up with two older brothers in the house which I think helped with my oral development. It is unclear as to which language I learned first. My brothers always spoke to me in English and my parents only spoke to me in Spanish. As far as I can remember, my internal dialogue has always been in English!

Before I ever started school, books were already introduced to me. I had a little library of my own at home! The "baby" books were all in English, so I am unsure as to who would read to me since my parents couldn't speak or read in English. My guess would be my brothers!

By the time I was in kindergarten, my home library had already grown! I was addicted to reading and collecting books. I really got into it once I was in first grade and we started getting tested for our Lexile Level! I can recall my Lexile Level always being slightly above grade level. I also liked to challenge myself so I would always pick a couple books that were slightly above my level. I loved to read anything that was fiction!

In the first grade, I was sent to a speech therapy class because I had difficulties saying some words with the letter W. The two words I can remember were "word" and "world". I only had to go once to speech therapy before the school realized that I didn't exactly need it.

First grade was also the time frame where my interest in my Spanish grew. I was never taught to read in Spanish and just remember grabbing a book and being able to sound the words out and read. My parents were pretty shocked because again, they weren't the ones to teach me how to read. Growing up I was super shy, but I was VERY observant.

I didn't learn how to write in Spanish until a couple years later when I had learned the Spanish alphabet.

Growing up, I always thought my writing needed major improvement. I was never happy with my stories/essays. Turns out I just overthink my work because during my entire school journey, teachers have always complimented me on my writing skills! To this day, I still say my writing skills need major improvement, but I might just be saying this because it is my least favorite thing to do.

As of today, I am trying to get back into reading! I always look back at how happy books have made me and think back to how much the importance of reading was stressed throughout my life. Reading more books has become one of my priorities this year. My friends and I actually talk about starting a book club. This year one of my goals is to read more and fall back in love with books! I am also learning to love writing and all its different genres. I have recently been journaling and just writing whatever comes to mind.
