Boys and girls spend their free time at home differently. For example,Boys tend to play sports or games. It is much more common for girls to play a game that involves them talking with each other and working through problems (like playing dolls) than for boys to do so. This develops their language and reasoning skills aiding them in educational attainment.

Parents tend to place higher expectations on their daughters academically to do well. For example, a girl would have to do twice as well in school to get the same recognition a boy would get for doing half as much by their parents. This may motivate them to do better and study harder to make their parents proud.

Nowadays, girls tend to have a lot of powerful and smart role models to look up to. for example, there are feminist posters in a lot of classrooms and the media that inspire the girls seeing them to strive for higher goals. Boys don’t get the same treatment, which may affect their attainment.

Girls tend to mature earlier than boys, and understand how important studying hard and doing well in school is. For example, the average age a girl matures is 16, while for boys it’s in their 20’s.

Boys tend to be overconfident, overestimating their ability to do well in school without working hard. Girls have the opposite approach which ends up in them doing better at school and exams. An example of this could be the fact that boys are praised for minimal work in the classroom and at home, but the same can’t be said for exams.

Boys tend to be more affected by the anti-studying subcultural effecting todays youth. A lot of them think that by studying or doing well at school, their social status in the eyes of their peers will go down. For example, not being seen as a “nerd” is way more important for boys than for girls.

A lot of boys have unrealistic dreams that don't require academic success, for example, being a professional sports player. Thus they don't see the point of doing well in school. This can be linked back to girls maturing faster than boys.

Schools in MIS tend to use positive discrimination to encourage girls to do well in school. For example, they’ll push their female students more in areas such as science and technology to make sure they succeed in them by allowing them to have accesses to lab equipment and computers before boys do. Boys don’t get the same treatment often and thus have lower educational attainment.

Schools tend to be stricter on girls to do better and behave better at schools. Behavior that boys may demonstrate would not be tolerated if a girl were to do the same. For example, a girl getting a low score may be met with the school calling their parents to let them know, but this same score may be average and expected for a boy to recieve.

A large amount of school and studying is based on reading and writing. Girls tend to be better a these skills, while boys tend to favor more active ones. Thus the education system is already stacked in favor of girls.
