In order to teach students about News Literacy I will divide the classroom into three teams. All teams will have a different card that has some facts relating to the same current event. They will then be asked to write a story in order to present the current event to the public. One team will receive a card that has minimal information, including the name of the people involved, time, and location. The other group will receive the names of the people involved, time, location, and some background information. The last group will receive all the information including the end result of the event. The idea behind this is that students will notice that they were all trying to tell the same story, but two groups had to make some information up. I will then go over ways to tell if a news story is true, and the importance of making sure a source is reliable.

After doing more research on News Literacy I have a better understanding on the important role that it plays in our lives. We are living in a very digital age and it is more common then ever for people to get news online. It is now becoming easier for false information to be accessible, and it is even easier for people to post inaccurate news. Therefore, it is my responsibility to make sure that my students are getting accurate information. Not only do I need to make sure that the information I am teaching them is accurate. I also need to teach them how to identify false information. It is important for them to be able to distinguish fact from fiction.

When I was in elementary school we never learned about netiquette, because the internet wasn't as influential as it is today. However, by the time I become a teacher technology will be even more advanced and my students will know more than me. It is my responsibility as an educator to teach my students how to send a proper email, how to cite sources, and how to avoid becoming a cyber bully. Technology has such a large impact on society and it is vital for upcoming generations to learn how to properly use it.

Through completing this project I now see the relationship between news literacy and netiquette. Netiquette are ways that a person can be a good digital citizen. Some examples include not plagiarizing , and preventing cyber bullying. Another aspect of netiquette is posting reliable information for others, and making sure you inform people if you find an unreliable source. Sharing and posting accurate information is a big part of news literacy. One aspect of news literacy is being able to identify whether a source is reliable or not. In order to be able to identify and share reliable information a person has to have good netiquette.

Netiquette is the proper way of behaving on the internet and being a good digital citizen. A proper digital citizen uses polite language, does not spam others, and is truthful with who they are. News literacy is knowing how to identify reliable sources. News literacy requires knowledge on identifying what is real and what is fake. Both netiquette and news literacy goes hand in hand on behaving appropriately online. It is crucial to educate children on both netiquette and news literacy so they know how to communicate on the web.
