As an early childhood teacher, I believe each child is a unique individual with their own strengths and abilities. My role is to nurture this uniqueness by creating meaningful learning opportunities through observation, active listening, and play-based experiences that extend their curiosity and build confidence, belonging, and a love of learning.

I value children’s rights and ensure their voices are heard, respected, and included in curriculum planning. Guided by the UNCRC and the EYLF, I am committed to inclusive practices that reflect and celebrate diversity, acknowledge First Nations perspectives, and actively involve families in the learning environment.

In my teaching philosophy, inclusive practice is central to creating a nurturing and equitable learning environment where every child feels valued and respected. I understand that children come from different cultural, linguistic, and socio-economic backgrounds, and I am dedicated to appreciating these differences. The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) aligns with my beliefs by promoting engaging, play-based learning that supports lifelong success. I would do this by  celebrating a range of cultural activities, stories, art and crafts that reflect the diverse identities of children in my practice and also involving families in the program by encouraging them to share their cultural experiences to enrich the environment. Not only that, I would design environments that accommodate and value children by incorporating visuals in their languages.

I view documentation as a vital tool for making children’s learning visible, meaningful, and accessible to families.

Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, I use observation, family input, and assessment to inform planning and foster collaboration. I also adopt a strengths-based perspective, seeing children with additional needs as having “special rights,” and designing individualized learning plans that celebrate their capabilities.

I believe secure relationships are essential for children’s wellbeing. Drawing on Bowlby’s attachment theory, I focus on building trusting connections with children and families to support resilience, smooth transitions, and emotional development.

Inspired by John Dewey’s philosophy, I embrace hands-on, inquiry-based learning to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration. Through experiences such as gardening, STEM, cooking, and loose parts play, I encourage exploration and teamwork that prepare children for lifelong learning.

APST Standard 1 is crucial to my teaching profession because it aligns with my philosophy of prioritizing each child as an individual. This approach allows me to continuously improve my teaching strategies to support all students, regardless of their abilities or backgrounds. As a teacher, I have enhanced my ability to recognize the various factors influencing student learning and implement strategies that cater to diverse physical, social, intellectual, linguistic, cultural, and developmental needs. Initially, my focus was on physical milestones, but I have since broadened my approach to include social and intellectual development, understanding that these areas are interconnected and essential to how children learn. By incorporating research-based practices, such as hands-on experiences, I understand the importance of creating inclusive learning environments that foster a sense of belonging for all children, regardless of their backgrounds or abilities.

This standard is crucial for my teaching profession because it guides me in designing curriculum that are inclusive and engaging.  Descriptor 2.3 highlights the importance of understanding the curriculum, assessment, and reporting processes to design and implement learning experiences based on the planning cycle, which includes observing, assessing, analysing, evaluating, and reflecting. Additionally, my teaching philosophy aligns with this standard by incorporating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures into my practices, which reflects the principles of culturally responsive teaching and promotes equity and reconciliation in the classroom. For example, I aim to start each day with an Acknowledgment of Country, which not only fosters respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples but also helps create a culturally inclusive environment.

 I am confident in implementing a range of strategies that encourage active learning and critical thinking. My planning aligns with frameworks such as VEYLDF, which helps me provide meaningful experiences for the children.

Standard 5 is crucial for my teaching profession as its underscores the importance of understanding and enhancing children’s learning and assessment through effective assessment practices.According to John Dewey, assessment should not only evaluate the students but also foster their learning by incorporating various methods that supports experiential education, where children actively engage in real-life experiences. John Dewey advocated for formative assessment as s guiding tool for children’s learning helping them connect theoretical knowledge with practical skills and that assessment should help children to reflect on those experiences. By implementing these principles, I can create a learning environment that not only measures children’s progress but also actively contributes to each child’s development.

Recognising the importance of supporting children from trauma backgrounds, I proactively undertook professional learning in trauma-informed practices. This training deepened my understanding of the impact of trauma on children's development and equipped me with practical strategies to support their social and emotional wellbeing. Through this professional learning, I have strengthened my ability to create an inclusive, responsive, and nurturing environment where every child feels safe and supported.

In addition to formal training, I actively collaborate with allied health professionals such as Preschool Field Officers (PSFOs) and speech therapists. By working in partnership with these professionals, who visit, observe, and provide targeted strategies. I am able to respond more effectively to the individual needs of children, particularly those requiring additional support. This collaborative approach not only enhances my own learning but also ensures that each child receives tailored support to promote their holistic development and inclusion.

As a teacher, I understand my role and responsibilities, including the importance of being familiar with and adhering to all relevant legislative requirements, such as mandatory reporting laws. I have a legal duty to report suspected child abuse and neglect, a responsibility to protect children and promote their welfare. For example, If I suspect abuse or neglect, I must report this to appropriate authorities. By adhering to these, I am playing a vital role in protecting children from harm and ensuring a safe learning environment

As a teacher, engaging with professionals and community will help expand my knowledge and skills. I would be collaborating with professionals such as speech therapists, social workers and community workers to get insights in to special areas that support children with diverse needs. By doing these, I become better equipped to meet the varying needs of the children in my care.
