At the age of 16 his father died and he moved to Memphis Delta to begin his life in the cotton trade. His career started when he joined the Tennessee Mounted Rifles. Seeing how under equipped the squad was though, he helped pay for new equipment. This paved the way for his promotion from private to lieutenant colonel. This promotion put him in charge of his own battalion of 650 troops, who he was responsible for training and arming. His battalion became one of the most feared units in the civil war and earned him the name, "The Wizard of the Saddle". He was later promoted to brigadier general and continued his threatening march around the civil war. Forrest's career wasn't all good though, he was involved of one of the most controversial battle of the civil war, that battle being Fort Pillow. Not only did he join the KKK which was bad enough, he ended up becoming the first and last grand wizard of the KKK. The name was given to him because of his military name, "The Wizard of the Saddle". He is credited with uniting the members of the KKK around the US even though he denied all affiliation with the Klan.
