The equity literacy framework is different from existing equity frameworks because it enables educators to be a threat to inequity and to actively cultivate equity in their systems.

The Equity Literacy Framework outlines the skills and knowledge necessary for educators to not only promote equity but to also be a threat to inequity. These are skills that take time to develop especially for people who have never experienced inequities. It is important professional learning around these skills and knowledge meets people where they are, but also goes far enough to help people develop an equity lens which can be applied to every decision and policy that effects students.

An elementary school used their marquee to celebrate kids' birthdays. When I praised the district for this practice, they informed me that each family had to pay $5 to get their name on the marquee. This made me wonder how the students' families who couldn't spare $5 might feel or if some families would choose to go without something in order for their kids to be celebrated on the kiosk.

Maybe this can be done by helping school leaders "audit" their current practices through a lens of equity with students of poverty in mind.
