Milliken v. Bradley. A Supreme Court made up of Richard Nixon's appointees rules that schools may not be desegregated across school districts. This effectively legally segregates students of color in inner-city districts from white students in wealthier white suburban districts. The article argues that if the children and students of all color weren't able to learn together how could they possibly learn to live together. Just a few years prior the Supreme Court realized that segregated schools were unequal and should be abolished and now Nixon rules that schools shouldn't desegregate. It feels like a step backward.

Governor Orval Faubus sends his National Guard to physically prevent nine African American students from enrolling at all-white Central High School. Reluctantly, President Eisenhower sends federal troops to enforce the court order not because he supports desegregation, but because he can't let a state governor use military power to defy the U.S. federal government. The Supreme Court had just came to the realization that segregated schools should be abolished because they were unequal and here is the governor and national guard trying to prevent young African American students from getting there education and the president only fighting back because he sees it as a threat to his power not because he supported desegregation and wanted to equality for all.

California Extends Public Education to Children of Chinese Immigrants 1905 - Amelia Medina

In 1905, the U.S. Supreme Court requires California to extend public education to the children of Chinese immigrants. Children of Chinese immigrants who lived in the country for decades were denied education solely on their race. Some even said they were a danger to others well beings. They didn't have the proper resources available to learn and they were left in the dark. Until, California Superior Court judge ruled that the school's refusal to admit Mamie Tape based on her race was a violation of California state law and the U.S. Constitution. The California Supreme Court confirmed that decision when the state appealed, and held that Chinese students had a right to public education. The Court's decision did not, however, prohibit the creation of segregated schools.

African Americans mobilize to bring public education to the South for the first time. After the Civil War, and with the legal end of slavery, African Americans in the South make alliances with white Republicans to push for many political changes, including for the first time rewriting state constitutions to guarantee free public education. In practice, white children benefit more than Black children. In former slave holding states, African Americans saw education as an important step towards achieving equality and independence. With education they could gain knowledge and essentially know what the white man knew so that they weren't at an advantage and that they were all equal and had the same opportunities.

This means that local immigrant communities lost control of their local schools. Makeup of school boards changes from small local businessmen to doctors, lawyers, big businessmen and other members of the richest classes. Essentially they wanted to get rid of the native language, traditions, and culture.

I mentioned before in class that it seems that every time we have a major war or event, the country experiences a shift in ideology that reflects back in education and the work force. Right before World War II we were going through the Great Depression which took a major tole throughout the country which led to the new deal which gave us a ton of reform on education and led to the G.I. Bill being passed guaranteeing soldiers that come home from the war a chance at getting a college education payed for by the government. https://scholarworks.gsu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1074&context=mse_facpub
