How chips can cause so many problems🍟✖

This happened last year on our trip to Edinburgh. Raquel and I lived next to a shopping mall, so we decided to go there for a pack of chips. We went to the Burger King. When we had to pay, the waiter gave us change with Scottish money, and we needed the ones from the UK, so I asked him for "Sterling pounds". He looked at us with a strange face, so I repeated it again and again. After a few tries, I told him we needed "normal pounds". He started to be quite annoyed and told us that there were a lot of people and that he couldn't waste time with us. So we took the money, ate the chips and went home a little bit disappointed, angry and confused

The next time, we went to Mc Donald's and we had another problem there too. There were a lot of people so we had to take.a number. Raquel had the ticket, so when she thought she had heard our number, she went to take the chips. Some minutes later, she heard our number again, so she went there and took another pack of chips. We thought there had been a mistake, but we didn't say anything. After a while, a couple started walking in our direction with angry faces. The first pack of chips Raquel had taken, was theirs. We gave it back to them and regretted the mistake Raquel had made. When they were far away, we burst out laughing

Never go with Raquel anywhere with food!!

My meaning confusion happened many months ago. Last summer I went on holiday to France with my cousin Rosa-Ana, who is French, her boyfriend, Stephán, and Stephán´s sons Louis and Antoine.
We went to the South coast, almost to Cannes, and we stayed in a village called Grasse, where perfume is really important. Everything was going great until our second day at the lake.

It was our third day at Grasse, and we decided to go to the lake again. We looked fot a good place to leave our things and then had a warm swim in the lake. We played some games in different languages, had races and did more fun activities, and then, I made the mistake. Antoine´s hair was all over his forehead so I decided to put his hair into a little ponytail. When I was going to do it, I said to him ``¿Puedo hacerte un quiqui?´´, and, of course, he didn´t understand was I was saying. In that exact moment my cousin looked at me and asked me what I had said. I told her, and then she started to burst out laughing. In fact, when Spanish people say ``quiqui´´, we are talking about a little ponytail in the hair that is on top of the head, but in French, ``quiqui´´ means penis. That´s when I realized why Antoine was looking at me with a disturbed face.

Definitely, we should first ask about the vocabulary that we don´t know, because that was a mistake that I made talking with my family. But can you imagine doing it with some unknown people? How embarrassing that would be!

This happened on the trip to Edinburgh last year. The teachers, one afternoon, left us free time and Lucia and I said "Let´s go shopping." The last store we went to was Primark, which was near the place where we had been with the teachers before. The truth is that we spent quite some time there and almost did not realize what time it was and that we had to go to the other place. We arrived a few minutes late, but that was not the bad thing. We called a teacher to say that nothing had happened to us, but that we were going to be a bit late. We were hanging around for a long time because we didn't find the place where we had stayed with the teachers, and we were asking people how to get to the place. Either they didn't know it or they didn't understand us, and after a while we called one of the teachers. We told the teacher that we didn't find the site and he asked us where we were and we told him the place. He told us to wait there and that they were going to look for us. After a while a teacher and some of our classmates arrived and they were laughing at us and asking what had happened. THE WORST THING OF ALL IS THAT WE WERE ALMOST NEAR THE PLACE WHERE WE HAD BEEN STAYING !!!!

When we arrived where the rest of the teachers and classmates were, some of the teachers started to quarrel and we were punished.

We did all of the activities together except one, the free time on Princes' Street. On that day, we had some hours to buy things, like food, and whatever else we wanted to buy. Instead of going with Maria, I went with Raquel. When the time was finished, we had to meet the others at an exact point. All of us were there, except Maria and Lucia. Raquel and I were very worried, because they were our partners. I was calling them many times and they didn't answer. A few minutes later, they could talk to us and they said to us "Where are you?" We went to look for them with a teacher and finally we were together again.

Last year, we were in Edinburgh for a week. David was my partner and our house was in a separate neighbourhood, so we had to take the bus to go anywhere. The first day, we were going to our house, and we saw a street with a 24/7 shop that was really similar to the one that was in front of the place where we had to get off the bus, so we stopped there. We started walking, and 45 minutes later we finally thought: "e are lost", so we called the teacher and asked her about our house. We were lucky, because it wasn`t so far away, but we needed to use Google Maps. The key message of this anecdote is that everybody must use Google Maps when in an unknown city. It`s a very useful app.

The Sweet Shop

Once, while in a boarding school in England, the rest of the students and I went on a little weekend trip to the village near the school. We had some free time to go shopping, so my friends and I decided to enter a sweet shop.

It was old-fashioned, so, instead of picking the candy and then paying, you had to ask the shop assistant for the kind of sweet and the quantity. I had a friend called Harmony, who was English, and she advised me to try a sweet she called “dollars” which were basically like the host they give you in church service but with the shape of a dollar bill.

She then told me to ask the assistant and went to look around, leaving me alone and clueless. It was the first time I was in a place like this and my English skills needed improvement. Despite that, I decided to give it a shot and I asked the shop assistant for ten dollars while pointing at the candy. The assistant seemed confused and asked me:

“ You mean pounds, don’t you?”

I was about to die of embarrassment, so I decided to agree to anything he said. I knew something was strange because he wouldn’t stop staring at me, confused, while putting the so-called dollars into a plastic bag. At first I thought that he had misunderstood me because he filled the bag until there were more than forty “dollars” in it, when I just asked for ten.

I suddenly realized that what the owner had meant when he said “pounds” wasn't the name of the sweets, but the amount of money that I wanted to spend on them and he thought I was so dumb. I couldn’t tell the difference between dollars and pounds. So, you can imagine my horrified face when he offered me the giant bag of sweets and said kindly with a smile:

“Ten pounds, please”

I learned the hard way that in this kind of sweet shop, when they ask you for the quantity they don’t mean the amount of sweets, they mean the amount of money you want to spend.

The funny part of the story is that I didn’t even have the money, so instead of rejecting the bag and offering my apologies I decided to do the appropriate thing: I took Harmony by the arm and ran to the door and onto the street, leaving the poor man with a smile on his face and ten pounds worth of “dollar” sweets.

On our third day there, we did an excursion to Brujas, in Amsterdam.
We spent the day touring around the city, but when we were coming back to our car, it started to rain. We waited in a cafe in case the rain would stop, but it didn't, so we decided to risk it and go out .
At first it was okay, but then it started to rain so much that we could not walk anymore, so we stopped in a toy store that was close by. We asked the shop assistant if we could stay on her porch until the rain calmed down, but she understood "if we could ROB her store", and she kicked us out of there! We had to walk all the way back to our car under a horrible rain, but at the end everything came out well because we got to our car and drove back to our house.

While we were having dinner, we talked about what we did that day and about our Spanish traditions.
The third day, we were talking about the food that we normally eat in Spain and we mentioned the dish: sopa. Our "mother" understood shop so she was very confused. She didn't know how we could eat a shop!! She asked if we have special shops made of food or something, and we explained to her that sopa was the name of a dish in Spanish😂 It was a very funny confusion that I'll never forget!
