• I mainly used oil and soft pastels, emphasizing on hard pressure and harsh lines applied while using them to imitate the uncoordinated movement of a child coloring with crayons.

• Isolate: The compass is isolated and on top of some images from the trip. Doing this draws attention to the compass.

• Substitution: The teddy bear has been substituted for sand, making it look like a sand sculpture.

• Add: From the teddy bear, I added a sand playing kit (bucket and shovel), I also added a compress frame and crab with shells on the sand bear for details.

• Symbol: The sand bunny is to smybolises me but also that this trip made a mark at Kep Beach, meaning everytime I go there I think of the trip. The crab on the bucket is a landmark of Kep, being the blue crab. The sand playing kit is supposed to be my two close friends who I went on the trip with, by making them a bucket and shovel it shows that they work well together.

• Color: The colors are mainly brown/yellow and blue. This is because there are contrasting colors but also because warm colors show the warm and comforting parts of the trip, while blue shows the more adventure side of it.

• Animate: I had drawn fruit juice flowing out of the kettle which shows childhood flowing out of the kettle into the oasis of memories

• Contradict: The kettle is levitating which makes the world more magical and unique like a dream where things are like fantasies

• Scale: The kettle is enlarged to show and make the environment feel calm and relaxing

• Substitute: I replaced the teddy bears eyes with oranges and mouth with a banana that is smiling as it shows the teddy bear relaxing and that the oasis is refreshing

• Symbol: I had drawn an oasis that represents the time and memories I had enjoyed going to kampong saom and koh rong with my family and the fun experiences I had at the beach and ocean where I felt most home and relaxing. I used fruit juice instead of water to show that this moment was a sweet memory for me and it was very precious core memory. I had used a kettle pouring the fruit juice because it shows that my time at the beach that will always be remembered and also the creation of new memories pouring into the oasis of memories. Lastly, I wanted to show some of my favourite memories in the huge bubbles to show that the oasis is the pond of memories I had at kamppong saom and koh rong.

• Symbolism: The composition features a yellow plush Care Bear symbolizing personal growth and stability in teenage life. A makeshift bed and photo album represent comfort and stability. Polaroids from the album represent memories from tough times. The message is about comparing oneself to the past, creating nostalgia, and creating prosperity for the future with a newly established sense of self.

  • Brushes used closely resemble watercolor, aiming for a layered and soft feeling, without merging the past with the present.

• add: the technique of adding is most prominently seen in the addition of the bear, pillow, and pictures. The composition focuses on the photo album, with the addition of the bear taking away from the focal point, alluding to a bigger overall message. The addition of the pillow and scattered images taken out of the photo album play a part in symbolism, as well as the overall theme of warmth, comfort, and nostalgia.

• Combine: the combination of the pillow and the photo album leads to the idea of a bed, utilizing the combination to push the message of comfort in the environment the Care Bear is situated in, despite the strange makeup of the bed. The care bear is also seen as a form of combination of a stuffed animal and the essence of me, allowing the bear to have a more organic and lively face compared to what it would originally be.

• The teacup symbolizes my family, as we often used blue pottery with flower patterns for our plates, mugs, cups, and even decorations.

• The island in the middle of the tea symbolizes Phnom Penh, showcasing more recognizable buildings, as I associate them with home and a sense of belonging.

• The sunset formed from the steam recognizes my connection to my home. I live across the river, and I get many sunsets with amazing showcases of color and natural beauty, which I tried to capture in this piece.

• The people falling through the skies show my friends and I often getting into crazy situations, but making the most out of it either way.

• I combined the steam and sunset while adding an island to the tea to further connect me to home, recognising those two things as belonging.

• Khmer traditional wooden house: Represented my grandma house located at my hometown in Svayrieng province where i was born. I made it fit in an old worn shoes with mini scale to illustrate the memories kept full of enjoyment and calming belonging sense whenever i was there.

• Rice field on a rooftop: I decided to add a rice field on top of the rooftop because it's too clearly depict a side country in Cambodia and how i love going there whenever i feel bored to get fresh air and clear all the stress.

• Mango trees: In term of creative technique I decided to make the mango tree at the side of the house that can straightforwardly shows my comfort zone of beside chilling in the rice field and at my grandma house i love spending time alone enjoying the nature and breeze under a mango tree while getting to enjoy it's delicious fruit.

• Book shelf: I placed the bookshelf next to the old worn shoes house so that it can also connect to the past since the old worn shoes is mainly represent about past and old moment. So putting it next to old worn shoes the book shelf is represented as my old elementary school where i felt the most sense of belonging and the place i would never wanted to leave. The two dolls siting on the shelf depict my friends where we used to make an old memory together that can't forgot. The people where i felt the most safe with to spend time and show the real side of me.

• Sand: On top of the book shelf, there is a pile of sand contain with a small bowl of rice with incenses. This is to show my 3rd belonging place is at my hometown, pagoda beside home. This is where i made most of my memories together with all of my relatives socialising and feel like im also one of the people who live there for a long time. The sand basically represent one of the moment where we walk around the praying spot with a hand full of sand throw them to four different spot with incense to respect our religion of buddism.

• Watercolor: I decided to only use watercolor of this final drawing idea since the texture of watercolor is giving a calm and a soft texture that i'm trying to capture in this drawing since the drawing is about nature and a sense of peacefulness.

• Symbolism: The mouse in the drawing is to represent me since I was born in the year of the rat. The sugarcube is there to show the sweet part of life. The teacup is tipped over because it shows that I've grown up a lot and I'm not a kid anymore.

• Modify: I added wheels to the tea cup because the tea cup represents my childhood. It has wheels because I'm growing up, so the tea is always moving. The tea got changed into my blanket, to show my favorite baby blanket.

Substitute: I had replaced the snowman head with a snow globe replaying a nostalgic memories of skiing in Niseko when I was little.

Scale: I had made the snowman into a smaller size as a keychain so I can carry it around with me everywhere and remembering the memories.

Isolate: I had isolated and showed just the snowman keychain with the snow globe head as this will be a core memory I will be holding onto for a long time.

Symbolism: I replaced the snowman head with a snowglobe to represent my favourite memories of skiinng in Niseko as a family trip they will always be remembers and made me feel most at home. I had combined the snow globe and a snowman together because one of my favourite memories at Niseko was building snowmans with my siblings and cousins there which I had a lot of fun doing. Additionally, I had made the snowman into a keychain to show that I will carry the memories with me for a long time and represents a token of connection that I will keep very closely with me. Lastly, I wanted to make the snowman glow to show that it was a bright and joyful memory I had.

• I chose this medium as I wanted something super vibrant and blendable

• I chose to color this in a very vibrant pink color to symbolize femininity, youth, and playfulness.

• This drawing shows younger me in a pink princess dress. I wore them very often.

• Magnifying the dress and minimizing myself shows how I felt and thought I looked at that age.

• I used an overhead/bird's-eye view to show the scale of the dress compared to me

• With this artwork, I aimed to convey the feeling of protection from the dark through a blanket that holds a familiar sense of comfort for me.

• The exaggeration of the blanket protecting me as a ghost and the eyes in the dark showing my fear are things I relate to a lot.

• The choice of orange and purple resonates with me, as it reminds me of home, where I often witness beautiful sunsets that fade from purple to orange.

• Orange is also a color that brings warmth to me, showing how it radiates from the things I'm finding safe in this artwork.

• Minimize: In the composition, the care bear is minimized, visible by considering the surroundings in the back (comprising larger mushrooms and moss, indicating that the bear has been shrunk to a minuscule size). This plays into the symbolism and intent of the illustration, depicting the Care Bear as me, shrunk, to represent my role and effect in the scale of the world, and others being minuscule, playing into the theme of sonder. 

• Modify: different from the other bears I have drawn before this experiment, the bear is composed of different colored parts, reminiscent of Frankenstein’s monster; the different parts that make up the bear are also seen to vary in size, spacing, and positioning. This symbolizes the experiences and insight I have gathered throughout my life, grouping experiences or individuals of similarity with a single color representation. An example of this would be the yellow head of the bear; although the color of yellow resembles happiness, the composition of the bear distorts the meaning, symbolizing the hardships and effort put into finding happiness within difficult and stressful times, hence the oddly shaped ears and displaced eyes. 

• Magnify: although the scale of the subject is not magnified, the aspect of the bear’s stomach being enlarged can be seen as magnification within a minimized status. The enlargement and use of color direct attention to the body of the bear; although the green blends in with the background, the other components, such as the legs and arms, surround the base with vibrant colors, symbolizing how even though my background may share similarities with other individuals of my physical maturity, what makes me different are my experiences, that are built off of the base.

   • the burden of conflicting societal expectation: honor the family name as a woman, honor the country as a cambodian, but dont point out things that need change because its just the way things are;

   • feeling distant (visual distance in composition/subjects) and deeply frustrated; but feeling that im too idealistic, that wishing for a better world is naive, that i should revert back to cynicism because that is the cultural norm; and that addressing problems and vulnerabilities is "doing too much"/"cringe"/"tryhard",

   • that it is not my place to feel so deeply for, that i am not a hero, that people might think i have a saviour complex, that it is performative

The main message i'm trying to share is how I want to connect with my culture more with language, but due to soical pressure I feel like I'm always judged and unable to grow.

Art analysis:

• Magnify: I made my head/person bigger because I want the main focus points to go to there. This allows the audince to focus on the head's faceal expression and thoughts.

• Add: There is add in both of them because I'm adding Khmer symbols and items from Khmer culture (Khama scraf, Apsara statue, Romdul, lotus), allow the audince to see my culture more.

• Subsitude: For idea 1, the body and head is subsituded for stone to show how I feel unable to speak like stone.

• Isloate: Used for both ideas, this shows creates more focus on the scene at hand while also showing that I don't think/talk about this feeling much.

• Contextualize: In the sketch, context is provided, enabling the audience to understand a deeper meaning within my artwork, possibly relating to my experiences. This sketch explores the difference between Chinese students who study abroad versus within the mainland, pointing out the different stereotypes that each community has towards the other. The background is theoretically washed out and colored dully, with cracks within the walls to illustrate the stereotype of the importance of history and artifacts within Chinese culture, generalizing the entirety of China to a few important individuals. In contrast, the bear placed on a Greek-inspired pedestal raised above the other artifacts symbolizes the hasty generalization that those in the mainland often make about the western population, grouping anyone outside of China within a single theme (hence the modifications on the pedestal indicating that it is not fully Greek). 

• Symbolism: symbolism is portrayed mainly through the care bear in the center of the composition, appearing in the middle of the room; this symbolizes me as a person and how, compared to my relatives, I live a much more comfortable and flexible life, allowing prosperity and options for my future, which allows them to believe that themes of stress, depression, and anxiety do not apply to me. This aspect of my composition aims to appeal to a wider audience of teenagers who experience the alienation of going back home and not fully relating to their culture and ethnicity.

• Contextualize: the second sketch focuses on the haste of progression into adulthood that teenagers aspire to have, moving the pace of integration into society as a priority of being taken seriously; ranging from adults to pre-teens, the goal of presenting yourself as mature and experienced has become a trend, especially with the influence of media and constant peer pressure from those they trusted. This theme especially relates to me, as the environment that I live in maintains a tendency for popularity and isolation of alternative styles, which has had great effects on my mental and physical health throughout my pursuit of education. 

• Symbolism: the vape cushion, beauty toys, and university and job application data placed across the room contrast with the infantile bedroom, creating the first meaning in my creation. In addition to such components, the labubu toy and a blanket sewn with symbols that mimic social media features further emphasize the concept of being under pressure in contemporary society, with people like myself.

• Man with a plastic bag on his head and scavenging tool: The figure represents me from marginalised communities particularly in Steung Meanchey landfill surround by people who lived by scavenging. A man barefoot journey away from the garbage cage toward modern skyscrapers reflects how society has changed its physical environment yet left the poor behind.

• The garbage cage with a bird inside: Symbolizes entrapment in poverty. Unable to escape even though the world around me is changing

• The flying plastic bags connect the old landfill to the new city buildings showing that problems of poverty continue even in modern times.

• The hand tearing the wall means that the poor people (me) are trying to break free and adapt to change but it is very hard for us. We need to work hard and fighting for our future to escape from the mud toward a bright future.

• Second drawing:

• The drawing shows home and belonging by contrasting a girl’s stolen childhood with the life she deserved. Her lower half stuck in the Khmer Rouge era with chains and hard labor shows a time when she had no safe home, no freedom, and no chance to dream. The upper half, peeking into a modern, comfortable room, represents the life she should have had a safe home, school, and a place to grow and belong. It shows how war and hardship can take away the feeling of home, safety, and belonging, leaving people trapped between the past they suffered and the life they long for.

• The khmer rouge era is basically showing my past self when i was young i am trying to fight against the poverty and getting education. What media i could use to capture the texture and the desire conveying mood and emotion toward my drawing?

• Acrylic paint:

  • I wanted to use acrylic as a main media for this artwork. This is because it can produce a rough while also smooth texture at the same time, since i mainly focused on the idea of the sense of belonging in juxtaposing form between progress and poverty obscurity.

  • Furthermore, acrylic paint can be used thick (impasto) or thin (watered down). The thick paint with a palette knife can show progress where it feels strong, heavy, and full. While thin dry and scratchy layers to show poverty of weak, empty, or worn out.

  • Layering, it can build many bright layers of paint in one area to show progress like time and energy stacking up. Leave other areas flat or patchy with canvas still showing through to show lack or being left behind.

The texture of the lines is soft and faded, the lines are colorful and soft which makes them comfortable

The lines are all mixed up, and it's hard to see where the lines are going to which makes them feel distressful. Some lines are blurred and drawn out of the line, which makes it distressing too

aspects I aim to take into my own artwork:

• Referring to my inquiry question focusing on color and correlation with emotion, the washed and desaturated colors will be my main focus for my own artwork

  • This aspect would convey my message through the inquiry question, as toned-down colors would enable the audience to view my artwork without excess strain to the eyes, and also allow the emotion of tranquility and even positivity to be portrayed, which aids my composition in symbolism with an established mood.

• Composition and enlargement of one object in comparison to others is an element of illustration I plan on experimenting with in my 30x30, with reference to this particular example

  • enlargement of the cake in the original piece allows focus on that object; similarly, enlarging the main subject (carebear) would allow the audience to understand the representation of the bear better as me as a person, but also make the supporting aspects of my composition appear less/different.

Material consideration:

• Watercolor: the texture and ability to layer would assist in the goal of creating nostalgia, therefore creating a sense of belonging, making watercolor my primary choice of medium, despite its limited color flexibility.

• digital art: the flexibility of digital art would enable me to capture the emotion of nostalgia nd belonging a lot more, as the selection of pens and textures available to me is endless. If this method of drawing were to be picked, I would base my texture on chalk and watercolor, aiming for a blended look, with the preestablished knowledge of dull colors.

• oil paint: although a replication of the original artwork of inspiration, oil paint would require a lot more time and planning if implemented, therefore making it my last option. The use of oil on canvas would allow me to layer and create a sense of depth within my artwork, which would allow the message of growth to be shown.

• In the painting, the subjects are placed in the foreground, each with differing scales and proportions. This makes the figures seem strange and the setting dreamlike.

• The distribution of individual components in this piece create a balanced rhythmic flow in the composition.

• The gentle/subtle values allow comfort within the strangely scaled space, furthermore the subdued colors and imperfect implied textures distinguish each section.

• The representative figures effectively communicate the relation of each subject to the other, creating an active/dynamic narrative.

This artwork shows how the artist tries to incorporate the senses of smell and taste in their work. The use of vibrant colors, recognizable shapes and ingredients, as well as a very simplistic, cartoony style, makes the artwork seem more sweet. The recognisable flavors and colors can give the audience more of a sense to what the food in this image would taste like.

This artist took part of his memory and implemented it in his artwork, and adjusted parts of his memory to describe his feelings during that situation. I want to follow his intentions, which really makes his artwork simple, and communicate many stories/meanings/ emotions in one memory. I would use traditional Cambodian furniture/objects to capture part of my childhood/home and isolate the fun vibes, contrasting with the sad, heartache that was tormenting.

What possible media will you explore? Why? What will it capture your desired visual language?

Gouache or acrylic because I can control the transparency in the paint, which allows me to see the outcome of the artwork to achieve the desired feeling in my final piece. The paints are colorful but softer and muted, which will help me

• The painting represent the harsh reality of country life as can be shown through the peasants coarse faces and bony working hands.

  • This is similar to my theme of art piece as well, where it focus on social working classes and their hardship of working as lower class who are stuck in a surrounded progression in Cambodia.
