IT was so exciting to see how engaged the students were during our work on honeybees- informational text. Over several weeks the students learned and recalled the parts of a honeybee, the jobs of different bees, as well as why we need bees as humans. It was exciting to see first graders realize and write about how such a small creature (the bee) can have such a big impact on their own lives . I know it was eye opening for them as well.

I saw how the teacher went through the TLC cycle. I have learned to incorporate the process very well. I see how powerful it is and how engaged the students are throughout the lesson. This process can be used with any text.
Benerisa Perez
Ethel Phillips Elem.

The teacher is a reflection of how we have been trained to incorporate the Teaching & Learning Cycle (TLC) in our daily academic teaching. The process is well refined and can be applied at any grade level or subject being taught.

Angelina Flores
Ethel Phillips

My celebration: Learning centers.
My students have come to love the learning centers! They look forward and even moan when it is time to stop. I have 11 centers going on and the students are in pairs working independently while I pull small groups at the back table. It was hard at the beginning due to constant interruptions and because it was a new concept for them and me but I continued and I am happy I didn't give up.
Benerisa Perez
Ethel Phillips Elem.
K-Bilingual

I found a wonderful book called Imani's Moon about a little girl in Africa. She wants to touch the moon and after many tries she finally succeeds. I asked my students to write about something they want to do. Their responses were very thoughtful and they demonstrated how deeply they had thought about the story and themselves. It was a magical experience for me.

The teacher did many of the things that I also do. I was waiting for a think and and pair and wanted to do it about one sentence before she did. It was a good reminder of how to strategically stop and then resume a story so that meaning isn't lost as skills are taught. The art of good teaching.
Diane Fore K E.

Students enjoyed the Joint Construction after selected stories. It was difficult at first because I was trying to do it all in one day. Now it takes us a little longer because we take one part per day (orientation, complication & orientation) each part is done in a different color. It has also, helped students in their independent writing.
Angelina Flores
Ethel Phillips
