What I knew about painting before the module

Before taking this module, I really had a hard time appreciating paintings given the fact that I am color blind. When I talked about paintings, I mostly focused on the history behind it; always associating the work with the life of the painter.

Overall, my knowledge of paintings back then was only limited to the stories I read in books and the movies I watched. Obviously, these books and movies mostly showed the life story of the painter. As such, I really was not exposed to any proper training in analyzing paintings.

What I learned in the module about the form of painting as Fine Art

Like sculptures, paintings have no utilitarian use. They exist for the sole purpose of giving glorification to beauty. As I mentioned, before the module, I was limited to only the historical or political context behind the work. Recently, with the help of the module, I realized that in analyzing paintings, the background story and the colors does not make up the whole painting. I used to think that my color blindness was a hindrance to my full understanding of a work. But then, I learned that there are other principles that the human eye can observe. Principles like pattern and movement are things that I have now come to appreciate even more. Like for instance, the pattern and movement exhibited in Van Gogh's the Starry Night is able to add layer to how I perceive the painting. It awakens in me this invitation to somewhat be a part of the painting itself.

Ever since I encountered this module, I have come to appreciate paintings from the Renaissance. In addition to the artworks discussed in class, I am interested in learning more about it. I guess it is because I really find the Renaissance period, particularly the Reformation, to be very interesting.

Other than that, I am also interested in learning about the influence of the Renaissance and the Baroque in the Philippines. Given that we are a Catholic-dominated country, I am certain that these techniques and principles in painting were able to reach our shores. I am also curious with the personalities behind those works of art.
