However, its secondary target is to raise the profile of graphic novels and manga amongst school librarians and teachers.  The Excelsior Award attempts to highlight some of the amazing books that are out there - books that fully deserve to be in our school libraries alongside regular fiction!

Comic books can be a great way of interesting children who aren’t enthusiastic readers. Comics are often filled with high-energy plots, beautiful illustrations and engaging language, and can be more accessible to reluctant readers than text-only books.
To highlight the power of comics in improving literacy skills, 'Words for Life'  spoke to the UK’s comics laureate Charlie Adlard, put together a list of suggested comics, created a tool for helping children to make their own comics and much more…
