It is a very useful musical device that can be used in two different ways. One way is that of a more literal sense. The music can express a sort of sad tone but the lyrics may be happy and promote a joyous theme. The 2nd way "sappiness" can be used is through our own memories. Nostalgia and "sappiness" work hand-inhand and cause the listener of a specific song to feel very emotional. "Sappiness", in this instance, is a bitter-sweet feeling. The listener relives specific memories that may be happy or sad but sometimes that can be painful. You long for the past but you also get to appreciate where you have come by looking back at the past. These memories can help you gain perspective and depending on the person, this may be a good or bad thing. Every person's experience, when dealing with nostalgia, can differ but it is important to recognize, that in any situation,  your feelings towards the songs and emotions you feel may sometimes contrast with one-another.
