Cinema Trip - 'Belfast'

The first activity I did was a cinema trip to see Belfast at Curzon (Aldgate). As a Digital Film Production student, this is relevant to me because it's an industry related venue. The reason why I went to see Belfast was because not only is it a favourite to win an Oscar this year but it's also a must see film in terms of culture, writing and story.

Belfast is set in the late 60s where at the time there was a lot of violence relating to religion (Protestants and Catholics). It showcases a young boy, Buddy, who experiences life at a time like this. Being a kid he'd never experienced these events before so it's interesting to see how Buddy reacts to it. Supposedly, the story is based on the Director and Writer (Kenneth Branagh) and Buddy is meant to embody Branagh.

After seeing this film, it's influenced me through writing and culture. Going into this film, I didn't know anything at all that was happening in Belfast in the late 60s but now I've learnt the historic side to it. Learning facts is one thing but Branagh takes you on this journey of what it's really like then. From the conversations he has with his family to his life in school, Buddy is a strongly developed character. I think this film has taught me that the most simple lines of dialogue can mean so much. You don't have to always be so dynamic in your writing, you just have to make sure it flows well I think in some cases. I really enjoyed this film and I recommend it highly!

Museum Trip - Tate Modern

The second activity I carried out was a trip to the Tate Modern. The reason why I took a trip there was because I wanted to explore more about modern art as I'm not fully educated on it. Not only is modern art cool but it's interesting as a variety of artists share the perspectives on how they see the world.

I went to the Tate with Joe Conroy (another student on the Digital Film Production course, the same as me) and, personally, it can be sometimes tough to take in and appreciate art. After I'd left I felt so inspired and I was also amazed by how everyone else sees the rest of the world. It's also interesting to see how different artists portray their art by using different materials, sizes and shapes. Some of the sculptures were massive and the thing with modern art is that it ALWAYS has a reason to why it's made in its unique way.

Whether I'd create my own piece of modern art, I don't know but I definitely have learnt there's different ways of portraying story through the films that I'll make. It's also inspired me to create documentaries about art too.

Museum Trip - British Museum

The third and final activity I carried out was a trip to a British Museum. The reason why I went there was because to explore history and different cultures. In particular, I wanted to explore the temporary Japanese and Korean cultured exhibitions they had and I was also interested in some of the French art too.

I'd never been a fan of the British museum as it always seemed quite boring to me but with trip I really did find some interesting about it. Hyundai Motor Company were hosting a Korean exhibition/gallery at the British Museum. I was fascinated by some of the stuff I saw, one thing is particular was the craftsmanship of plates, cups, vases etc. Even the most simple things I was really interested by, not because they looked cool but just the difference in attention to detail. The same goes for the Japanese exhibition too and I've always had an interest in Japanese military/weaponry. They were showing old Samurai armour and katanas etc. and the detail they put in to it is staggering. It's not needed at all but it beams Japanese culture and gives them a unique aspect.

From this museum trip, I've been really driven to create a film based around maybe Japanese and Korean culture as it's so interesting to explore. It can be tough at the stage I'm at but to go in depth about that would be brilliant. Definitely a dream of mine.
