Fasting in Islam, particularly during Ramadan, carries profound wisdom and benefits, both spiritual and worldly. Here are some key aspects of its hikmah:

1. Spiritual Growth and Taqwa (God-Consciousness)

Fasting is a means to attain Taqwa which is piety and awareness of Allah, as mentioned in the Quran:
"O you who have believed, fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you that you may attain Taqwa." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183)

It strengthens faith by increasing devotion, prayer, and Quran recitation.

2. Self-Discipline and Patience

Fasting teaches self-restraint from food, drink, and desires, fostering patience and control over impulses.

It helps in overcoming bad habits such as excessive eating, gossip, and negative thoughts.

3. Gratitude and Appreciation

Experiencing hunger makes one more appreciative of the blessings of food and drink, leading to increased gratitude toward Allah.

It reminds people of those who are less fortunate, encouraging acts of charity and generosity.

4. Purification of the Soul

Fasting purifies the heart by reducing distractions and worldly indulgences.

It enhances sincerity (Ikhlas) since fasting is a hidden act of worship, known only to the individual and Allah.

5. Health Benefits

Modern science supports the health benefits of intermittent fasting, such as improved metabolism, detoxification, and weight control.

It gives the digestive system a break, helping in digestion and overall body rejuvenation.

6. Strengthening Social Bonds

Ramadan fosters unity as Muslims worldwide fast together.

It encourages communal prayers (Taraweeh), Iftar gatherings, and charitable acts, strengthening the sense of brotherhood.

7. Developing Empathy and Compassion

By experiencing hunger, fasting cultivates empathy for the poor and motivates people to engage in charity which is Sadaqah and Zakat.

8. Training for a Life of Devotion

Fasting serves as spiritual training, making it easier to continue acts of worship beyond Ramadan.

It develops a habit of waking up for Tahajjud (pre-dawn prayers) and engaging in Dhikr (remembrance of Allah).

9. Strengthening Willpower and Focus

By resisting food, drink, and temptations, fasting strengthens determination and focus, which can be applied to other areas of life.

10. Reward and Forgiveness

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
"Whoever fasts in Ramadan with faith and seeking reward, all his past sins will be forgiven." (Bukhari, Muslim)

The reward for fasting is immense, as Allah says in a Hadith Qudsi:
"Fasting is for Me, and I will reward it." (Bukhari, Muslim)

Fasting is not just an obligation but a powerful tool for self-improvement, spiritual purification, and strengthening one’s connection with Allah.

Niyyah (intention) and Ibadah (worship) are fundamental concepts in Islam that define the sincerity and purpose behind every act of devotion. Niyyah is the internal commitment to perform an act solely for Allah, while Ibadah encompasses all acts of obedience that bring a believer closer to Him. Understanding their connection is essential for ensuring that our worship is meaningful, accepted, and spiritually fulfilling.

Thus, niyyah is the foundation of true ibadah, ensuring that every act is performed with sincerity and devotion to Allah.

Zakat and Sadaqah are two important forms of charity in Islam, each carrying numerous virtues and benefits, both spiritually and socially. Here are some key virtues associated with them:

Virtues of Zakat

<var></var>

Purification of Wealth and Soul – Zakat purifies one’s wealth and helps in detaching from materialism.

Obedience to Allah – It is a mandatory act of worship, reinforcing a Muslim’s submission to Allah.

Helping the Needy – Zakat ensures wealth is redistributed to the less fortunate, reducing economic disparity.

Increase in Blessings – Giving Zakat does not decrease wealth, rather, it brings barakah (blessings).

Virtues of Sadaqah

Protection from Hardships – Charity extinguishes sins and protects from misfortunes.

Continuous Rewards (Sadaqah Jariyah) – Some forms of charity provide ongoing rewards even after death.

Brings Divine Mercy and Forgiveness – Sadaqah is a means of gaining Allah’s mercy and expiation of sins.

A Sign of True Faith – Charity reflects sincerity, gratitude, and care for others, strengthening the community.

When we give Sadaqah in the form of money, Allah may reward us in different ways. It is not necessarily that He will replace it with money; instead, He might grant us blessings in other forms, such as good health, protection from harm, or unexpected opportunities. His rewards are beyond material wealth, encompassing both worldly and spiritual benefits.

Both Zakat and Sadaqah cultivate generosity, empathy, and a sense of responsibility, leading to a more just and compassionate society.

It has been a journey of learning, self-improvement, and spiritual growth.

One of the most impactful lessons I learned is the importance of sincerity (ikhlas) in our intentions and actions. It reminded me that even small acts can be meaningful when done for Allah’s sake.

I sometimes struggled with maintaining consistency in my ibadah, but the support and motivation from my Usrah group encouraged me to keep striving for improvement.

My wish

I wish that our connection could grow even stronger.
