White Bengal tigers are distinguished by the color of their fur. White fur caused by a lack of the pigment pheomelanin, which is found in Bengal tigers with orange fur. Compared to Bengal tigers, white Bengal tigers tend to grow faster and heavier than the orange Bengal tiger. They also tend to be somewhat larger at birth and as adults. Bengal white tigers are fully grown when they are 2 to 3 years old. Male white tigers reach a weight of 200 to 230 kilograms (440 to 510 pounds) and can grow up to 3 meters (9.8 feet) long. As with all tigers, the white stripes of the Bengal tiger are like fingerprints, and no two tigers have the same pattern. Tiger stripes are a pigmentation of the skin; if a person were to shave, their distinctive coat pattern would still be visible. [two]

For a white Bengal tiger to be born, both parents must be carriers of the unusual gene for white coloration, which only occurs naturally once in every 10,000 births. [2] Dark-striped white individuals are well documented in the Bengal tiger subspecies (Panthera tigris tigris), in addition to having been historically reported in several other subspecies. [2] Currently, several hundred white tigers are in captivity around the world, and around a hundred are in India. Their unique white fur has made them popular in exotic animal entertainment and at zoos.

An additional genetic condition can result in an almost complete absence of stripes, making the tiger almost pure white. One of these specimens was exhibited at Exeter Change in England in 1820 and Georges Cuvier described it as "Sometimes a white variety of tiger is seen, with very opaque stripes, and it is not observed except at certain angles of light." [3] Naturalist Richard Lydekker said that, "a white tiger, in which the coat was a creamy tint, with the usual stripes barely visible in certain parts, was exhibited in the old Exeter Change animal collection around the year 1820 ". [4] Hamilton Smith said: "A completely white tiger, with the stripe pattern visible only under reflected light, like the pattern of a white tabby cat, was exhibited at the Exeter Change Menagerie in 1820", and John George Wood stated than "a creamy white, with the ordinary tiger stripes so faintly marked that they were only visible under certain lights." Edwin Henry Landseer also drew this tigress in 1824.
