Most of the time, though, it just comes down to an unexplainable “I don’t like it” or “I never look good in pictures”.

The issue is that we see ourselves more than anyone else. Whenever see a picture or see ourselves in the mirror it looks original, unlike when in a portrait where each detail and mistake stands out. Also if your are an artist requires remarkable skill and effort just to do a portrait.
