The Distinctive Features of Joint Participation in a Community of Learners

Vygotsky and Dewey's research supported that social context and participation in shared activities is important in a child's development. Children should be provided opportunities “to participate in, initiate, recognize, relate to, contribute, explore, orchestrate, produce and reshape meanings through relationships with people places and things” (Duhn & Craw, 2010, p. 59). The sociocultural approaches emphasizes that joint participation can help teachers and children to successfully engage in shared learning activities that sit alongside more individual activities. These activities give students the time to process their thoughts and share with peers. Not only are you allowing your students to engage socially, but they are practicing skills that will benefit their education. The data presented in the article proves that developing a community of learners required teachers and children to form new learning relationships characterized by reciprocal connections across intellectual, social and emotional domains. Studies show that children learn best from their peers, as well as their teacher. Therefore, creating a strong community within your classroom benefits both you as a teacher and your students.

Article: The distinctive features of joint participation in a community of learners by Alison Sewell, Alison St George, and Joy Cullen

Creating A Community of Learners in Your Classroom

Having a community of learners is one of the most important aspects in creating a positive learning environment. From the first day of school and on, the teacher should strive for classroom cohesion. There are five ways to promote a community of learners. The five ways are, building a teaching team, developing a safe environment for peer feedback, having small group discussions, using documentation to promote collaboration, and involving students when making the classroom bulletin boards. Building a teaching team can help to generate various ideas to implement in the classrooms. Teachers should discuss different ways to create a community of learners and how to create a safe space for students to share their ideas. Students sharing with other students can often have a stronger impact than a teacher lecturing to the class. Students should be able to share ideas and strategies with one another. It is easier for students to talk about their individual ideas in small groups. Bulletin boards can also be another classroom tool to help build a community of students. Students should be involved with what goes on the board. Teachers should also document individual student work and take notes on their group collaboration and how they are learning together. This will help the teacher know how to improve on building a community of learners by knowing how their students work together.

http://www.makinglearningvisibleresources.org/creating-a-community-of-learners-in-your-classroom.html

This article talks about what the definition of a learning group is. A learning group is a collection of persons who are emotionally, intellectually, and aesthetically engaged in solving problems, creating products, and making meaning. There are certain features of group learning. Members of learning groups involve adults as much as it involves children. The learning process in a learning group is geared towards both the adults and children. The other feature is that documenting children's learning processes helps make learning visible and shapes the learning that takes place. This also allows children to see the progress that they have made in certain content and subject areas. Learning groups are beneficial to the classroom because they share a focus on learning in a group and understanding the perspective of others. Having groups in the classroom also allows for an environment where children can learn as a community. It is important for teachers to keep in mind to shuffle groups constantly so that everyone gets an opportunity to work with everyone in the classroom.

http://www.makinglearningvisibleresources.org/uploads/3/4/1/9/3419723/definition_of_a_learning_group.pdf
