Through conversations as a team, we critically reflected upon how our current philosophy does not reflect us and our unique strengths. This has led us to focus on a robust review of our inquiring into who we really are. The current philosophy is also very long and would benefit from being more concise.

ENVISIONED OUTCOME:

By February 2024, our statement of philosophy will have been reviewed and rewritten to better reflect the beliefs, values and strengths of our service and community. Together with the Approved Learning Framework, it will assist our teaching team in considering our approach to learning, development and wellbeing. We hope to seperate our philosophy statement and our philosophy in action to ensure the statement remains concise but the philosophy in action details what this might look like in oractice for all stakeholders.

 The rights and best interests of the child underpin all practice.

During a Professional Learning and Development (PLD) session facilitated by Consultant Jenna from Semann and Slattery on September 12, 2023, our entire team participated in a comprehensive self-assessment aimed at informing our Quality Improvement Plan (QIP). Preceding the self-assessment, we engaged in a thorough discussion on the National Quality Standard (NQS), National Quality Framework (NQF), national laws, and regulations, while also delving into the intricacies of the QIP process, exploring the different ratings and deepening our understanding of the exceeding themes. This session allowed our team to seek clarification, pose questions, and foster a collective understanding of the process.

The objective of this initiative was to ensure that each team member comprehensively understood the purpose of our data collection, promoting a holistic review of all aspects of our program, practices, systems, and processes from diverse perspectives. The insights gained from this process were utilised to identify our service's strengths, areas of compliance, instances where we exceeded the NQS, as well as pinpointing areas requiring improvement. Notably, this collective effort has not only enhanced our team's confidence in the QIP process and sparked a journey to document our QIP in a more collaborative way but has also clarified the teams roles in contributing to ongoing quality improvement.

Learning stories and observations are captured over time, not as magic moments or 'one off's' but almost as chapter in the same story. This enables educators, parents and children to review learning and identify continuity and opportunities for development. Developing stories over time and space (linking separate stories or adding extra ‘chapters’ to existing stories) enables our assessment documentation to show the development of goals / dispositions in different situations, and enables better understanding of the child as a learner in action. When the same sort of learning story appears in different areas of the curriculum, the goal / disposition is then considered more robust and potentially achieved.

4/11/23 Planning cycle PLD attended initially by our leadership team which formed the basis of critical reflection. We looked at each stage of the planning cycle and used this to then refer back to our current planning across all three rooms, then collectively identified areas of opportunity to improve. This reflection highlighted our strengths in gathering data but supported us to understand that our analysis stage of the cycle was not as robust as it could be and documentation at this stage was weak.

18/12/23 This training was then presented to the whole team and time and space was given for the team to ask questions, reflect on their current ways of working and then break off into smaller groups to discuss ways our planning process/template may be improved

As a team we were introduced to Simon Sineks Golden circle and the idea that many people know what they do and how they do it, but most people struggle to articulate their why, their values, their intentionality. We collaboratively discussed our roles and day to day in the context of the circle, working from the outside (what) to (how) then to (why) this left our why as a very shallow base. We then repeated the exercise working from the inward (why) outwards. When driven by the why (philosophy) the what (intention) and how (practice) are organically more intentional and authentic.

Children participate in regular outings to the library, where they are able to gain a love and appreciation for literacy and language. This assists in broadening children's understanding of their community and develop their understanding of the world around them while exploring stories with their peers. Parents and families are welcome volunteers, this also engages parents and families to access some resoucres and experiences the library has to offer such as readings, library cards and craft days.

Educators and children have continually built knowledge as seen in child diaries and observations on story Park. We have explored the use of vegetation and herbs in the garden and the children consistently assist in maintaining and harvesting the garden. We explore pollution and discuss ways to decrease (natural light, walking or biking to kinder). Children have explored sea pollution and impacts on sea life and corals.

Planning for families to participate in a book drive:

"Instead of buying something new, let's share what we already have! Bring up to 10 books your family no longer reads and choose up to 10 'new-to-you' books to take home 📚 Please bring any books you are wanting to donate prior to _____. We will set up stalls in the carpark for the different stories. Together we can reduce waste, save money, and give wonderful books a second life."
