Migration, immigration, displacement are concepts that affect all forms of living. It is not restricted to humans. Throughout this text set, students from 4th, 5th or 6th-grade level could identify similarities and contrasts between factors that generate movement to improve the quality of life.

Some of these books can be used in the ELA class with English Learners (EL’s) and non-ELs. Bringing awareness of the facts that drives people to immigrate can help students to assimilate and respect other cultures better.

This text set starts with the idea of showing migration in the animal kingdom, and how multiple species move around due to different factors. As a second piece, we will read about the concept of home and habitat and the safest place for animals and people. Movement is the third piece of this series, in many cases chosen and in others forced and the emotional implications of this transition. We do see not only human movement but also how human growth has forced animals to adapt to live in areas that are not their natural habitats.
The text set gets to the vital crises of refugees and all the global implications of this movement. Multiple books will narrate the political, religious and economic turmoil of people displaced because of the war.
Finally, we close our series with a books that celebrate the success of courages characters that survived and improved their lives after they had to emigrate.

This book is the first text that introduces the idea of mobility across species. It demonstrates that the animal kingdom always looks for resources and context that can provide them with food, shelter, warmth and allow them to procreate.

Atlanta: Peachtree.
The main character of this book is a little girl who spotted a weird orange cloud. After talking to her mother about what she saw they both walk to the woods to investigate. On the top of the trees, they discovered thousands of Monarch Butterflies resting during their journey south for the winter.
The book provides a map and descriptions of the migration south and back north of the Monarch Butterflies. This book is useful for social studies and science classes. If your class has some students originally from South America, they can relate to the same journey in search of better conditions to live.

Bunting, E., & Lewin, T. (2012). One green apple. Toronto: CNIB.
Farah is a new EL who experiences a field trip to an apple farm for the first time. She feels different. In the tour, she finds an apple tree that is different from the other trees, just like she is different from the other students. Students collect apples and then make apple cider. Farah has gathered a green apple different from the other apples, but it also becomes part of the cider. She made her first friends in that field trip. She felt that as her apple blended with the other apples to make a sweet juice, she eventually will blend with the rest of the children.
