When we do not want to hear their opinions or voice we treat them like they are not adults and use that as an excuse to silence them. It is a doubled edge sword. The video shows the importance of fighting back and highlights important intersectionality of Blackness and gender. This also goes into discussions of violence against women and the generational trauma caused.

Ryan: Although I have read the book, the video really brings to life the oppression and conditions that many black girls face. The 4th grader who spoke was so powerful. It really resonated with me when she asks "what can I do to not get pushed out?" In my school, we must activate what black girls may not see in themselves. We must look at our data and identify weaknesses. We must empower black girls, listen to them, and make a conscious effort to not push young black girls out.

Ryan: The Relationships are the Heart of the Work article/information led me to reflect on my own school. We have recently started groups specifically for young black girls and boys, as well as many other groups. The first day of one of our Young Women's group, the six attendees voiced objection to attending. Although they agreed to be in the group, I am not sure they saw the need. In only a few months, these girls have become empowered. They get along well with each other and have begun student-led social justice efforts within the building. We must do so much more, but I am excited to see how groups like this can grow and expand.

Karen and Andrea,
Thank you for sharing this video. I found it to be impactful for a number of reasons. First, it made me think about the trauma that many of our black girls experience and how these young ladies process these events are seen as disruptive and problematic in school settings. I would also say many of these same issues are true of young Latinas who share similar experiences. As I listened to the young 4th grader in the video share how it feels to be pushed out, it brought me back to my childhood. As a young 9 year old, I was very angry at the world after going to live with my dad and stepmom. I remember being angry for a long time and misunderstood by teachers in school. If it were not for my high school guidance counselor and school social worker who saw potential in me, I do believe my way of processing what was happening to me at home and how it was translating to behaviors in schools, all of which had nothing to do with my intellectual ability, I, too, would likely have been pushed out as well. As a community, we absolutely need to help heal the trauma of the young girls of color we serve. Very often their "behaviors" are actually cries for help and we could be the one person who saves their life. -Daisy

It seemingly didn't quite hit me during my time there, but all of a sudden it all clicked. I could picture it so clearly. I know I was aware on some level of the choices made by administrators, but never at the forefront of my mind like this with regard to the Black girls at the school. That is what is so insidious about this, that it happens right in front of your eyes and it may not readily register as clearly as it should. Thank you for the share, this is such a powerful video and message. -Joel

Much of the initiatives to this point feel performative in my district with students of color still reporting that they don't feel that real change is coming. Holding conferences to help learn skills for leadership, book clubs, and other initiatives. I would be happy to see my district take on these kinds of programs and events. Of course, the key to this being successful is commitment. -Joel

I greatly appreciate that you two, Karen and Andrea, focused on not only the harm being caused but also on the solutions. The needle moves slowly, but hopefully some progress is being made. The progress that might be made was powerfully expressed in the video when one of the speakers mentioned that true social justice work can be done only is girls are included. As a professor of Women's and Gender Studies, it's difficult for me to ignore how the history of gender discrimination is as prevalent in professional and educational environments as race and/or indicators of socioeconomic class.

After discussing it in class I watched the documentary and throughout the entire thing I felt that the stories of the girls were so similar to those of students I have had in my program over the course of my career. We do not get very many girls compared to the number of boys that we get, but the girls that we get have definitely been victimized by the system and are certainly victims of age compression.

I appreciate the thoughtful responses to the padlet and those that were attached on the class discussion. I notice that whatever districts we're working in, we see the issue of adultification impact our girls of color. Your video reactions conveyed a wide range of emotion and frustration and this also makes me consider how our boys of color are similarly punished unfairly and not given opportunities to explore innocence and the joy of youth. Building systems that promote healing, trust in schooling and deep connections start with our individual efforts to unpack what we've learned and have come to see as "normal" in schooling. The adultification of Black girls can not be "normalized" and it's up to us to interrupt, call out and change problematic actions as we encounter them. Most importantly, we must identify systems to implement to prevent this harm and separation. - Andrea
