In this module, I've learned about the essential roles that managers play in organizations, Managers assume three key roles: interpersonal, informational, and decision-making, shifting between them as needed. I have been able to incorporate these skills into my current job by utilizing the interpersonal role, I can build relationships with residents to create a welcoming, engaging environment. For the informational role, I ensure clear communication about events and listen to residents’ feedback. The decision-making role involves balancing resources and selecting activities that best meet the community’s needs

From this module, I want to highlight the importance of diversity in the workplace. Diversity in the workplace offers numerous benefits, including enhanced creativity, improved company image, better outreach, and increased employee morale. As a Black woman, I recognize how diversity particularly the inclusion of individuals from various backgrounds, ethnicities, and experiences can create a more innovative and open environment. When different perspectives are valued, it leads to fresh ideas, whether in product development or marketing strategies that resonate with diverse communities.

Diversity also boosts a company's image and morale. As a person of color, seeing diverse leadership and teams helps create a sense of belonging and empowerment. It reinforces the idea that my voice and experiences matter, not just as an employee, but as part of a broader cultural shift. In turn, this boosts my engagement and loyalty to the organization, knowing that it values inclusivity and is working to create an environment where everyone, regardless of background, can thrive

The module emphasizes the importance of understanding cultural differences when expanding a business internationally by illustrating how assumptions based on a company’s home country can lead to missteps in foreign markets. This makes it even more crucial for managers to understand these differences in order to effectively motivate and lead employees, build strong relationships with customers, and tailor business practices to local expectations. By studying frameworks like Hofstede’s cultural dimensions and the GLOBE project, businesses can gain deeper insights into cultural differences, helping them navigate international markets more effectively and avoid costly mistakes. Additionally, cultural awareness fosters empathy and sensitivity, improving your ability to navigate diverse perspectives and resolve conflicts. On a personal level, it broadens your worldview, making you more adaptable and open-minded in both your work and everyday life.

An organization’s structure is influenced by size, age, and industry. Departmentalization divides work into departments based on factors like purpose, coordinated effort, and hierarchy of authority, resulting in common structures such as functional, product, customer-based, geographic, and matrix structures. As organizations grow, communication issues between departments often arise, leading to the adoption of team-based, network, and modular structures to improve integration and collaboration. Currently, there are only three people in my department, we have a functional structure, where each person may take on specific roles or responsibilities based on their expertise. One person handling event planning, another handling administrative tasks, and the third focusing on resident engagement.

Onboarding is a crucial process for new employees, ensuring they are prepared to begin their roles effectively. Some companies mistakenly assume new hires can handle this alone, but a structured onboarding experience is essential for helping employees understand systems, expectations, and company culture. As an Activities Coordinator in a 55 and older community, effective onboarding would help you understand not only your specific job duties but also the overall company culture and how to integrate your efforts with other departments. Communication is also an important aspect because it is key the to organizing and coordinating activities successfully. Barriers like physical noise, emotional disconnects or information overload, which can affect your ability to relay information about events, schedules, and other important details to residents or staff.

Leaders focus on the long-term goals of a team or organization. They drive change, challenge the status quo, and help people grow to achieve shared objectives. Leaders also represent their team's values and vision to the outside world. This view of leadership can sometimes make managers seem less important, as they tend to focus more on day-to-day operations. An efficient leader also knows how to motivate their team as it energizes and directs behavior. While measuring motivation can be challenging, it's clear that motivated employees are more productive and contribute to higher levels of achievement. With me being motivated to host/ conduct programs, it enhances the success of the activities you coordinate, contributing to a positive environment.

This module provides us with insights on how and why setting standards and objectives is crucial for guiding an organization’s actions. Standards define how a company operates, while objectives outline the actions required to achieve its goals. Managers must regularly evaluate performance through both employee and organizational assessments and take corrective actions when necessary. By monitoring progress and making adjustments, managers ensure operations stay on track to meet objectives and company goals.

In management, planning is the first step of the four functions; planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. It involves setting goals and outlining actions to achieve them. However, planning can be challenging due to rapidly changing environments, and decisions may need to be made with incomplete information. Satisfying is when a solution is chosen that is good enough, while optimizing seeks the best possible option through extensive data collection. Decision-making can also be intuitive or rational. Businesses can use combinatorial strategies (focused on specific outcomes) or positional strategies (more flexible and adaptable). With my current job planning helps define the goals for the activities you organize and the steps needed to achieve them increasing participation or meeting resident preferences. My decisions are be based judgments from previous experiences.
