I have always tried to incorporate strategies for my TEL ( I just coined a new term, Teaching Emotional Health). They have not always been successful. Something I have noticed is no matter what school or central office position I have had, I need to stay away from that vortex of negativity. It’s more contagious than any disease and very hard to cure. I always focus on why I do what I do. I think about how I can flip this situation, for my own TEL, because if I’m not in the right place, how can I expect my kids to be?

"Lean on educational assistants and colleagues for support." Do we? There are incredible people and outstanding educators in every content and grade level on our campus. I will challenge myself to become more familiar with a colleague I do not know well throughout the week.

Building a resilient staff is a collaborative task. We are each responsible for our emotional well-being; however, having a team that realizes we can support and lean on each other is critical. I know we know many strategies and techniques to keep our emotional load in check it doesn't hurt to revisit these strategies occasionally. I love the reminders about writing a plan B on goals you hope to accomplish. If I can write it down and review it several times during the week, I will be more likely to ensure it happens.

I think most teachers are naturally resilient - especially if you've made it through the past 3 years of teaching and are still in the game. I think these suggestions are great, but not all are always attainable when educational environments are not the ideal. I agree with Ms. Zelden that negativity is contagious and you can make conscious choices to surround yourself with positive energy and work to start your day in a good mental state. I think leaning on colleagues and assistants is an important part of working in a team effort - it helps us all be on the same page as well. I think we can all work to open ourselves to support and willingness to support others. But this is also hard when we are being asked to support each other when we are short staffed. This become cyclical that being asked to support without getting the breaks you need affects your mental health as well. When all of your admin and support staff is being pulled in several directions as well, it is hard for everyone to lean on each other or be able to support everyone. Unfortunately this is a nation-wide reality. So how do we adjust, continue to be resilient and not be burnt out, when our environments are no longer ideal conditions?
