I believe that the American Dream, the term created by James Truslow Adams, is the opportunity for a person to become as successful as they possibly can in the goals they wish to accomplish in their lifetime. It doesn't only mean materialistic success or social mobility, but also individuality and community for many. It can range from being the richest person in the world to living in an apartment working a dream job. It varies from person to person, some may have the same dream, similar, or completely opposites. Anyone can dream to become successful which is why the American Dream can also be considered a "Human Dream". The only difference being in America, there are countless opportunities to become what you want, despite the circumstances and unavoidable obstacles we overcome as a race.

In this article titled "The American Dream Is Alive and Well" by Samuel J. Abrams, Abrams joins a study that surveyed a nationally representative sample of 2,411 Americans about their attitudes toward community and society. In this survey, Abrams found that Americans believe the American Dream did not select essential factors such as becoming wealthy, owning a home or having a successful career. In the article he says, "Instead, 85 percent indicated that “to have freedom of choice in how to live” was essential to achieving the American dream. In addition, 83 percent indicated that “a good family life” was essential. The “traditional” factors (at least as I had understood them) were seen as less important. Only 16 percent said that to achieve the American dream, they believed it was essential to “become wealthy,” only 45 percent said it was essential “to have a better quality of life than your parents,” and just 49 percent said that “having a successful career” was key." With this, a conclusion can be made that the American Dream is most definitely alive and well for Americans nationwide, and they all envision their own versions of what the American Dream is, which is the most important factor. Furthermore, in the article Abrams explains that many Americans believe they're already living their American Dreams, and those that aren't, are optimistic about their futures and are confident they can achieve their goals.

Well-known Hip-Hop artist Tupac Shakur wrote "The Rose That Grew From Concrete" to primarily focus on the power of perseverance and making your dreams come true through persistence. He talks about a rose that literally rose from concrete, to represent us as people rising from the hardships we endure in life to achieve our goals, no matter how big or small. He's very keen on making the point that anything is possible in America and you can achieve your dreams, so long as you hold onto your dreams and work hard for it. Despite your background or circumstances, such as being in poverty or suffering from racism, anyone can dream, anyone can work hard and anyone can become successful. For example in the poem he states, "Proving nature's laws wrong it learned 2 walk without having any feet." He's explaining how even with no help, no guidance, and maybe even no reliance, the rose/person is still able to accomplish a seemingly impossible task. Furthermore, Tupac says, "Funny it seems but by keeping its dreams, it learned 2 breathe fresh air." Again referring to your American Dream, you can stay consistent and work towards your goals. Lastly, Tupac ends this poem with, "Long live the rose that grew from concrete, when no one else cared!" Tupac ends the poem by saying to appreciate yourself for the progress you've made, even if you have been doubted and counted out by others.

I asked my Mom about the American Dream and what she told me wasn't too surprising to how I define it. She believes that the American Dream is the opportunity to achieve whatever you want in America. She explains it doesn't matter what you want, as long as you are dedicated and consistent. Her American Dream consists of my younger brother and I growing up to provide for ourselves and living a comfortable life, while she's able to relax as she gets older and potentially travel with my step-dad. My Nana had always told my Mom to just work hard and stay away from drugs, which she's always listened to and passed down to my brother and I; especially because "the real world can be a sh*t show" in her words. She's fully confident in the fact that the American Dream is realistic to achieve, and that the United States provides the most freedom to make a living.

In this short video, UCLA goes around their campus asking people about the American Dream, specifically if it's still alive, what it means to them and what their American Dream is. Many people believe the American Dream is alive and well. Some said that the American Dream has given them purpose, that it's harder for some people to achieve, and it's absolutely alive but it's based on how you define it for yourself. They explain that the American Dream is realistically whatever you deem it to be, whatever standard of success you set for yourself. One man, most notably stated that, "The American Dream as traditionally understood is dead, but it has been reinvented in a millions and millions of wonderful ways." Furthermore, these people explained what their American Dreams are, which include "every family can have the same opportunities as the most privileged family in America and we can all make the best of this country. . . to be able to do what I want to do with my life, where I want to do it and surrounded by the people that I love the most . . . to give back to my community, my parents and everyone who's around me that's helped me throughout my life." The American Dream is alive and well for anyone, so long as you have goals because dreams without goals, are just dreams.

Reyna Grande is an award-winning writer and immigrated from Mexico at a very young age with her family. She wrote The Distance Between Us to capture her family's experience in trying to pursue a richer-quality life in the United States and the heart-wrenching sacrifices and hardships they endured for their American Dream. In her book, she reveals that the American Dream, as stated before, requires intense amounts of sacrifice, dedication, perseverance and much more. Most importantly, Grande explains how her parents sacrifice their relationships with herself, her older sister and younger brother to pursue a better life. Her father left to the United States when Grande was too young to remember, and her mother followed soon after. She was left only with her grandmother, who raised them harshly and when they did come back, they were completely different people than when they first left. Her relationship with her parents was never truly rebuilt and she thinks about this to this day. However, once her parents and siblings got the United States, her siblings and herself all planned on attending college, until they didn't. Her older sister and younger brother went on to live their own lives and start their own families, leaving Grande to think about her future alone. Luckily, despite everything she endured and suffered from, Grande met a professor in college who parented her and pushed her to become a writer, since she loved writing and was naturally exceptional. Now, she's won an American Book Award, the El Premio Aztlán Literary Award, and the Latino Book Award, continuing to talk about her experience as an immigrant and how the American Dream is obviously alive and well for anyone.
