Genealogy (γενεά - "family", λόγος - "science") is a historical discipline that studies the origin of family ties, the history of genera and families. Oral traditions, historical records, genealogical analysis, and other sources that can confirm the kinship of family members are used to study genealogy. Genealogy is related to:
heraldry, diplomacy, local history, eugenics, history, etc.
Desires for family history are usually formed due to several motives, including the desire to determine the place of one's family in history, a sense of responsibility to preserve the past for future generations.
Genealogists, as a rule, research their own genealogy, or the genealogy of their spouse. Professional genealogists also conduct research for others, publish books, teach, or produce their own databases. They may work for genealogy companies that provide software or produce materials useful to hobbyists and other professional genealogists. They help to find out not only where and when people lived, but also their lifestyle, biography and motivation in certain situations. This is often due to outdated legislation, old political boundaries, migration trends, socio-economic, historical or religious conditions.
