I was super shocked that Okonkwo killed himself because he always shamed people who committed suicide. He said that it was a sign of weakness. For him to take his life is a big moment because it meant he felt so pressured by the missionaries, that he couldn’t handle it. He was also not supported by his tribe because they wouldn’t start a war against the missionaries with him, even after he made the first move of killing a missionary.

I was surprised because he was always a very strong willed person and most likely would have viewed suicide as quitting or giving up. Okonkwo probably saw giving up as an effeminate thing to do, so it is strange that he would end up doing something that he was afraid of.

I am not surprised by the death of Okonkwo. Okonkwo was committed to the traditional cultural and religious practices and ways of his tribe - as such, his death as a result of his incompatibility with the Christians was expected. The Christians wanted to spread their government, religion, and way of life with the Ibo, so it's sensible that they'd take care of any opposition that faced them.

Okonkwo's death was tragic, yet fitting to his character. Okonkwo's abrupt death was surprising and somewhat comical to me as a reader. In life Okonkwo was so focused on culture and tradition and honorability that it guided everything he did in the novel. This obsession with being the perfect Ibo man makes his death extremely ironic as suicide is considered an very dishonorable death in his tribe. This irony and tragedy was given less than a page in the novel, which personally makes me emotional and sympathetic to Okonkwo and his family.

In my eyes Okonkwo’s death was not a surprise. Let me say that I did get spoiled half way through the book and knew for a while. But, when he took his own life i did not see it as a surprise. For starters he is a stubborn man so he would seem like the type of person to not let anyone or anything else take his life other than himself. Second he was CRUSHED under the pressure of the missionaries. I feel like that was the main cause. Once he came back to his father land he had seen the damage that had been dealt and tried to make a change. But when he came to realize that people were getting captured and there was no saving this land, thats when he decided that there was no point in living and so he hung himself. In conclusion after reading the entire book I feel that his death was deserved. He was a man that in my opinion did not deserve a happy ending. He caused so many people pain and it finally all came right back around fo him

I thought he had it coming as a lot of the time he was impaulsive and would always resort to violence. i felt like he couldn't except the change which is what led to his death as he couldn't live with himself that his own clan had become in which he descirbed as weak and afraid of taking action. I was super shocked mainly beacuse he would always pride himself on being strong willed and brave, which for him to killhimself is a big suprise.

I didn't expect him to go out this way regarding how big his ego was, and how much of a proud and powerful man he described himself to be.

I am heartbroken over Okonkwo's death. It was anticipated because of my discussion with others at my table, but I was still caught off guard by it. I don't entirely like Okonkwo, but I am so sad to see him reduced in such a way. Okonkwo isn't a great person, but at the end of the day, he is a man who would give anything for tradition. It shows how strongly Okonkwo felt, in killing himself, but also how the entrance of white men to the area had taken a toll and reduced the clan's traditions. I hate that he is looked at as a funny, little anecdote for the District Commissioner's book.

It had been made clear that Okonkwo was no longer an essential member of the clan, and he had isolated himself after his imprisonment. The death of Okonkwo seemed to be his last act of desperation after his long and winding road of downfall. Personally, I thought he would be killed by the clansmen after killing the messenger for committing a second crime. The scene of Okonkwo's suicide does not seem thematically coherent after his speeches of manhood and bravery throughout the duration of the book.

I thought that Okonkwo would kill himself because I knew that with Okonkwo's titles becoming less significant he would think he had nothing to live for. Also Okonkwo thrives in tradition and without it he doesn't know who he is. For the whole story Okonkwo has let himself be a byproduct of his culture. He knew from a young age that the way his father was wasn't correct. So he tried to be the polar opposite of him. This meant that Okonkwo wasn't really being himself he was being what he didn't want to be. Therefore, with Okonkwo just being the shadow of his culture, when the culture fell apart, he fell apart.

Okonkwo killed himself because he couldn't handle things falling apart but I thought he was stronger than that. It was a pretty coward move, or in his words very womanly. Killing himself showed weakness that he swore he didn't have...and I'm just shocked that he didn't push through. In the end, I feel like he ended up who he always feared he would be. And I feel bad for his family, but maybe...it just took things falling apart for his true self to come out. He always said that the strong were born strong.

I was shocked to see Okonkwo's death because he didn't seem to care about others besides himself. The ending kinda threw me off guard but overall I thought it was a good thing he died. I thought this because he was affecting the lives of others and made their lives bad.

I was caught by surprise from okonkwo's death but I can see how it happened. I wouldn't think of okonkwo as the type of guy to kill himself because he was all about being strong and independent. But I can see how he killed himself because even though he put on a tuff act he still felt bad about the things he did. He felt bad about killing ikemefuma and he felt bad about nowe leaving. He probably understood how Nowoe felt but didn't want to admit it to himself.

I wasn't surprised about the fact that Okonkwo died, but I was surprised at how he died. I figured that maybe he would get into some trouble with the foreigners and/or other villages, or end up in a war. I wasn't expecting him to kill himself because of how he adamantly adhered to his culture, and the fact that taking your own life was looked down upon. Because he was such a powerful man who was set on climbing to the top, I never thought he would kill himself seeing as that would destroy all his honor. However, it is symbolic that as the foreigners drove his culture to its demise, they also drove Okonkwo to his own.

I feel like Okonkwo's death was bound to happen with in the book. However, I did not expect him to die this soon and by suicide. I thought Okonkwo would die fighting the church trying to win back his culture. I feel like this is kind of what Okonkwo deserved because of how he had acted throughout the book. Even thought he did do some things that had redeemed him, it was only temporary. His good actions had not outweigh the mental and physical abuse he put onto his wife's and children. The way he treats the people around him ended up breaking him and eventually killed him.

I wasn't surprised that Okonkwo died I didn't think that he was going to kill himself but it was a posiblity. I feel that Okonkwo was somebody who shut off his emotions and bundled them up until the end where they exploded out and he killed himself becasue he couldn't contain his emotions anymore and killed himself becasue he saw himself as weak and killed himself becasue of it.

Okonkwo's death was not surprising, as he always bottled up his emotions, and when one does that, they blow up. Also,he seemed like the person who wouldn't let anybody else take him out, so he left life on his own terms.

Okonkwo's death didn't come surprising to me, just the way he died did. I would never think someone who viewed them self so powerful would commit suicide. In many people's point of view, they view suicide as the easy way out and someone like Okonkwo would never accept. Okonkwo couldn't handle anymore things in his life falling apart after all these years of pushing everyone around him to be like him. I feel as his death wasn't "deserved" but it makes sense.
