Repetition, in music is a series of sequences and sounds that weave together and being repeated or looped. As a part of the music, it stands out importantly that it is a way of establish the rest the music, just like a hook. With that being said, the pattern of repetition can grab the attention from the listeners easily and draw them in a setting. Without repetition, then there is no any existence of music. The essence of music is repetition. Any types of music is built on repetition with instruments. Like the harmony, the melody, and the rhythm. The meaning of repeating the rhythm is to maintain and dominate the flaw of music or songs exclusively. The meaning of repeating the melody is to gain the attention from audience and they have a moment of music that keep in mind and next time they hear the same music once they can sing or hum along with the music or songs. According to the reading of 'the concept of repetition' from Ratliff, he points out that there are good and bad effect on repetition. For good repetition, it has positive influence on actions with positive upkeep and a way to make people focus on the music and on the other side, the repetition in music may let people get bored easily. I totally agree with Ratliff's argument regarding repetition. In "four organs" from Steve Reich, the entire piece is basically built on repetition. The rhythm is constant, the melody was formed by the sequences of harmony of organs. The composer could still keep the curiosity of audience due to change the sequence of harmony from repeating the same sound. Another piece from Hans Zimmer "time" was built on the repetition of melody and the layers of background harmony with different instruments increased till the climax and the rhythm was constant and stable through the whole work.
