Knut Walther – from Bremen (Germany)

Hello and good day everybody!
My name is Knut - a Scandinavian and German first name. Even so, in Germany this name is nowadays rather rare. You'll find it more often in the north of Germany – that's where I live; in the south, for example in Bavaria, it's quite unusual. And I suppose that in Germany this name has never really been in fashion during the last 100 years.
The biggest star by the name of Knut – in the last 20 years in Germany – was a polar bear, that lived in the zoo in Berlin. Younger people, for example my students, often think of that polar bear, when they hear my name.
There are different theories about the roots and the meaning of the name: it either comes from the Old High German word "chnot", which means "free" and "noble", or it is derived from the Old High German word "chnuz", which means "audacious" and "daring" ; another origin could be the the Old Swedish word "knot" which means "knot" and in the broader sense "family". The interpretations, that I like best, are "free" and "family", because I see myself in between these two poles: on one hand my family and my friends are very important to me; and on the other hand liberty is one of highest values for me.
The pronunciation of my name is not quite easy, especially for english or french speaking people; abroad, I'm mostly called something like "Canute"...
But also in Germany, I have the impression, that the two consonants at the beginning of my name are almost a little tongue-twister. This phoneme seems to give funny a aspect to my name.
My family name "Walther" is derived from the the name "Walter" – a rather common name in Germany, also as a first name. It comes from the Old High German words "waltan", which means "to reign", and "heri" – which means "army"; I can't relate to that military connotation in my name at all! But fortunately I would say, that most of the German speaking people are not aware of that (historical) part of my name. I'd guess that German people in this day and age are mostly associating the German word "(Ver)walter" with it, which means "administrator"; that fits much better…

How I got my name?

I´ve been told that months before I was born my father decided that if the baby is a girl, she will be named Tuija. Unfortunately, my father died when I was three years old. So, I have never had a chance to ask any explanations to that decision.

A Finnish Big first name -book tells that Tuija is nature based name. Thya or Thuja is a conifer, but Thuja is also related to a tree of life and with the meanings ´permanent, sustainable, lasting´. The name Tuija was quite popular in the 60s and 70s. At 1960 - 79 there were 7686 girl named as Tuija. I myself have never had a pupil called Tuija.

My family name then. People have difficulties to spell the name correctly even here in Finland. The combination of H and K in the middle of the word seems to cause lots of problems. Often it is written wrong. So, people do not hear the faint /h/ in the middle. I have thought that it is not very common name, but I was suprised to see that according to certain surname pages it seems to be quite general in my country.

My name official name is Gabriele which supposedly means “God’s able bodied one”. So I’m supposed to be strong and healthy. Well, most of the time I am. My parents had always wanted to call me Gaby but when my father went to the registry office he was told that the name Gaby was not listed in the official German list of names. So I was registered as Gabriele but everybody called me Gaby from the first day. I think the last letter looked very American and very modern in my parents’ eyes at the time.

My first name Sirkku is a rather uncommon female name in Finland. Mostly it is in the form Sirkka. I have been told that the fairy tale of Snow white and the seven dwarfs was first translated in Finnish as Snow Sirkku and seven dwarfs. And then there are a total species of bird called "sirkku" in Finnish. For instance Emberiza citrinella in latin is named as "a yellow sirkku" in Finnish.
The name Hannele is a quite common second name in Finnish. It does not mean anything and it is in different forms in Finnish names like Hanne, Hanna etc.
My surname comes from the history of my husbands family. Once upon a time there has been a mill (mylly) and behind that mill there has been a small house of the family. The name Myllyntausta means Behind the mill.
