Teachers are being forced to approach them like high-stakes testing and it's taking away from valuable instructional time. Students are stressing over them (and regularly failing).

A huge barrier is that the RCTs provide no accommodations or adaptations for students with IEPs, ELLs, or other needs. There should be adapted work samples including visual supports, word banks, sentence stems, and more.... if an RCT is delivered and graded exactly the way it is written, none of them are accessible for unique learners.

A teacher-specific barrier is that the Social Studies rubirc is one size fits all, and it doesn't always make sense for the assignment. I was asked to score my kids on if they cited text evidence, the assignment was a comic strip that didn't accompany any text. If you are going to force us to give up instructional time for these, then make sure the data is going to be accurate and useful.

Barrier: The RCT rubrics do not match the point value given through Canvas. The rubric often indicates a score out of 32 whereas the score submitted is out of 6. (I'll point out that's additionally confusing given that 6 isn't even a factor of 32...)

"What is preventing your from using the RCT as envisioned?" That's exactly the problem. Every educator knows no matter how you plan, the day-to-day events in your class require change and adaptation. Requiring that the same RCT be completed at the same time, in the same format is problematic. It gives no room to adjust the assessment for your students. One size does not fit all. This was very short sighted.

The RCTs for 5th grade a mainly essays. I do not believe there is enough content/material in the curriculum to provide students with what they need to answer the questions in a meaningful way. They are being asked to analyze documents and respond with evidence, but there is almost no content/background knowledge for them to use. Analyzing a text means nothing when you don't have the background knowledge and context. The essays are boring and prescribed.

Hurdles: I wish that Social Studies and ELA aligned more. I also wish that the curriculum for both would have better resources as they do in the Math and Science curriculums. I also find it that 2 hours to teach two subjects that don't always align and making sure there is time for small group is a bit of a problem. Also, RCT's are not always appropriate for our students while in this pandemic.

These RCTs are an absolute waste of time. They are not aligned with other subjects like ELA, writing and they take up excessive time. The rubrics make no sense. They are also nowhere near grade appropriate. Teachers are teaching to the RCT to rush and finish them due to pressure from admin. Students are stressed about them. Social studies should be project based learning in 2nd grade. Having students complete these RCTs is stressful, a waste of time, frustrating, poorly written and advised, and not developmentally appropriate. They MUST BE ELIMINATED.

Most of my ELA and SS RCTs are aligned to 3rd grade standards, not 2nd. For example, to "meet expectations" for some ELA RCTs my students had to direct quote the text, but that is not taught until 3rd grade. Really frustrating to be penalizing my kids for things that they haven't been taught yet. In general, the RCTs are inaccessible for most of my students - who are performing well on benchmark assessments. This just isn't how they show what they know.

I also think that coming off a virtual year in which we ALL know that writing skills suffered the most, asking kids to show their thinking in writing across ELA, SS, and SCI RCTs is just not smart thinking. There is no other way for them to show their thinking, even if they know a lot about the topic. We should be responsive to where kids are in the district and allow them to show their thinking in a variety of formats.

The handouts provided to teach the students the content are not kid friendly and my students find them boring. I end up using my time to find other resources to supplement in order to prepare for the RCT. Many of the assignments ask for digital submission, such as PowerPoints and video projects. We don't have the resources to create a video project.

A barrier or concern I have regarding RCT is that they don't consider students who can't access the information due to limited reading abilities. These students must rely on their ability to memorize what is shared during class versus the actual text provided on the RCT. Another concern is the deadlines don’t allow for reteaching or for when I must extend lessons or push them back because I have to spend time frontloading because of the limited background knowledge of my students. Often to be compliant and meet deadlines, my students are taking the RCTs when I haven’t finished teaching the content making the data null and void. Lastly, as a non-DC native and 3rd-grade teacher, it was extremely difficult to teach DC history with the limited resources provided. At times I feel that although our goal is to be inclusive and equitable the curriculum and curricular resources do not reflect this. sentiment.

I do not feel that I get useful data from these assessments, and they are often much too challenging or not accessible for many students. We also teach the units in a different order, so the RCTs do not align with our timing. We also do not have enough technology for all students (and it is not realistic to have first graders log on to computers for weekly assessments), so printing out the RCTs (which are a hassle in and of themselves to find on Canvas) and grading them by hand and then inputting their scores is extremely time-consuming and does not seem useful.

I had a hard time grading the social studies RCT for the first two quarters. But having just read the rubric documents and guidance that were linked in the doc this will be easier next time. I feel like the content is a little dry in the SS curriculum and agree with what others are saying about adding more of a research project element for second grade would be more fun for students. This way they could show what they know in ways fun and meaningful for them.

Time :Not enough time devoted solely to the social studies curriculum - there then needs to be a lot of picking and choosing and sometimes, extra videos made for homework at night to fill in the gaps of what I can't teach during the week, in order to be able to have the kids complete RCTs with some fidelity and integrity. If I don't supplement with videos and explain some of the assignments leading up to the RCTs, the kids are lost, as some of the daily assignments are above their level or require more background knowledge than what has been given.
2. Prioritize: I teach writing, as well, and I have one hour across the day to teach both subjects. If we truly want our kids to understand the events of today by learning the events of the past so they can become helpers for the world, then we can't just say that social studies matters and create a pretty good curriculum to follow, but not prioritize the learning of it on a daily basis in school-based schedules. The curriculum is too rich to be overlooked.
3. RCTS need a ton of scaffolding - they are rigorous and hard, yet good. But, without so many extra supports, they cannot be completed as is. Too much is expected of the kids, considering how little time is devoted to social studies across the week.

3rd Grade- Content students are asked to engage with is well above grade level literacy levels, especially considering the subject matter and vocabulary demands. It takes many hours for each unit to put in the scaffolds necessary for access. This is especially true for ESL students, which is the majority of my students. The RCTs also only assess through writing, which means any of my students who might be able to show deep thinking and learning around the subject matter but do not have the literacy skills are not able to demonstrate their learning. I recommend having a greater variety of questions and different access points for the RCTs. 3rd Grade is also asked to write 3 paragraphs, but the ELA standards according to Achieve the Core writing samples are only for 1 well organized paragraph. We are also an IB school, so we have 6 unit of inquiry and it is very difficult to follow the districts scopes and our units. PYP also asks for student action, but the limits on how students demonstrate their mastery with RCTs means they have no agency in what is suppose to be our final stage in inquiry: action.

Why don't you trust teachers? Why do we need to be constantly micromanaged? As an all subjects teacher, I'm expected to do 5 RCTs PLUS all the other high-stakes testing (TRC, Diebels, iReady, Reading Inventory) PLUS all the tests for each subject . What a colossal waste of time. Let teachers teach.

The EL supplements were helpful for the first few RCTs but there are currently no supplements linked for the rest of the year. It's not clear what ELs can/cannot be provided. Differentiation is necessary. Typing is also a huge barrier in the lower grades. The students that can dictate as an accommodation (EL1) are able to do better than students who cannot type well, so the RCT isn't fairly measuring what students know or even when they could write if they could hand write.

On a personal note my 4th grader gets a lot out of PBL in class and group work on SS topics. He also does well with reporting out using presentations. I think this way of assessing is better than tests and can further share knowledge with other students- student led learning.

The full social studies curriculum cannot be even close to fully taught in the 40 minutes a week that we have it scheduled. It also seems to be the first thing to go or the first time block suggested to be used for assessments/make-ups or school events, so there are some months that go by with only a couple of social studies classes. Student absences add to this so that some students hardly get any social studies curriculum at all.

We are legally required to provide accommodations for students with IEPs. We should be providing accommodations for students who are ELL, unique learners, or just need extra support.

The lack of adapted work is a common issue across all DCPS unit plans and now RCTs. It saddens me that DCPS never provides adapted work, work banks, sentence stems, visual supports, reduced work expectation, etc. for students with unique learning needs- they know that the teachers will take the time to do it ourselves. Particularly frustrating to hear people in the Plenary, and the chancellor, boasting about their free time when I've spent countless hours of my personal time adapting RCTs for my students.

If you are going to require something of teachers it should be completely done, and done well, standards-based in the correct grade level, with adapted work samples to extend up and to accommodate down, and the rubric should be unique for each assignemnt and logically make sense for that age group of children.

These RCTs were slapped together with a one size fits all rubric for grades K-5 that is not applicable for any grade level.

Barriers...where do I begin? Time, preparedness of the kids-some of these RCTs are not developmentally appropriate and ALMOST all of them I've had to adapt for my students so that the convoluted questions and tasks make sense, there's no choice involved and tasks are often always essay based. If our goal is capture what students know, then let them show it in a way that works best for THEM. There has to be a better way to align the SS and ELA curriculum and a way to assess both without over assessing them.

Most of the students at our school are below grade level in reading, and these assessments are not accessible for them, especially with our large SPED population. There needs to be another way to assess that's appropriate for the student population and their needs.

Alignment within the whole curriculum should be considered too, not just ELA/SS. In 2nd grade science, students learn about plants AND in ELA they learn about plants. Due to departmentalization and new teachers (to the grade, not to the district), this was not realized and was a lost opportunity. An alignment document (maybe it exists?) would be incredibly helpful.
