In the last three pages it tells us that the two brothers have many goals. There goals were to have Doodle learn to swim, run, and fight. They found a scarlet ibis outside their house. They assumed it was from the storm because it is only found from South America to Florida. The one most interested in the bird was Doodle. The bird was known for bad luck so the aunt didn't go to see it. When they went to the Old Women Swamp later on that day they noticed that the sky began to darken. Then knew the storm was coming so they started to head home. At first Doodle was right behind his brother. His brother thought it would help if he sped up so he could learn to run. Doodle wasn't able to keep up but his brother kept going. At first his brother heard him saying help but the sound slowly drifted and he couldn't hear Doodle anymore. He turned around and Doodle was laying under a tree and wasn't able to talk. He wad bleeding from many places.

In the second 3 pages of the story, "The Scarlet Ibis", the older brother takes Doodle to Old Woman's Swamp. When there, Doodle had cried because of the beauty of the place. When there, they had tried to teach Doodle how to walk. After that, we see the older brother taking Doodle to the barn that held his coffin. When there, he has scared him by telling him about it and saying that he would leave him, if he didn't touch the coffin. On Doodle's birthday, Doodle and his older brother had surprised their family by showing that Doodle had learned to walk. This caused the family to cry tears of joy. We find out that his brother did not teach him to walk out of his own kindness, but out of feeling shame of the fact that his brother was crippled.

In the first three pages, the story tells us about Doodle's birth and his older brother. His family wasn't sure if he was going to survive due to his conditions. He was born with the name William Armstrong, but his brother named him Doodle because he looked like a doodlebug when he crawled backward. Doodle's older brother felt embarrassed because his little brother was not like everyone else's. His older brother found him as a burden since his parents made him take Doodle everywhere he went.

In the second to last, three pages, 390-392, the story tells us that Doodle learned how to walk within a couple of months. Once the older brother had succeeded in teaching Doodle walk, he had started to believe in his own infallibility. They later found a red bird, known as, the scarlet ibis. Doodle then clasped his hands around his throat, and just stood there thinking.
