There are nine state-officialized tribes in South Carolina that we are aware of. They

are Beaver Creek, Edisto, Pee Dee of Upper South Carolina, Pee Dee of South Carolina, Lower Eastern Cherokee, Santee, Sumter, Waccamaw, and Wassamasaw.

They ate Traditional Indian foods and indigenous foods, even today their dinner tables are still adorned with a delicious spread of greens, fried corn, hominy, sweet potato pie, bear meat, rabbit, and bean bread.

Longhouses were the traditional homes for many of the farming tribes of American Indians that lived in southern New England, New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

Tribes may have both a civil leader and a war leader. The civil leader guided the tribe during times of peace while the war leader took over during times of war. Clans were further divided up into villages and families.

These Indigenous people utilized a variety of weapons, similar to those used in North America, such as spears, bows and arrows, atlatls, clubs, daggers, and shields. In addition to these, they also employed several other types of weapons in combat.

Historians believe that up to twenty-nine different Amerindian nations inhabited what is now South Carolina for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. These tribes belonged to five different language families: Algonquian, Iroquoian, Muskogean, Siouan, and Yuchi/Uchean.
