Why Does Solar Make Sense For Phoenix and Arizona

-Phoenix, on average, has almost 300 days a year of sunny skies. It's an ideal place to utilize the sun's energy.

-Average cost for solar panels in Arizona is $3.01 per watt. Average cost of installation is $15,000.

-This $15,000 investment is usually paid back within 5 to 7 years. Once solar panels are installed, you start saving money on electricity costs. Installing solar panels not only saves money long-term, but helps homeowners be self-suffiencet in their power supply.

Next Generation Science Standards 4-PS3-4 Energy. Apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another. Grades 3-5, 4

Students will be working in small groups (2-4) to build solar powered motors to power a small fan. Kits will contain 1-volt solar cells, 1 small DC motor, 1 propeller and a 2 pack of alligator clips to link everything together. Cost for one kit is $14.85 +(s/h).

Students will place solar panels in an ideal spot for sun absorption. Questions posed: what placement for the solar cells is ideal?

Teacher will demonstrate connecting solar panels to motor. Questions: What are the different parts of the system? Does the order and placement of pieces matter? Students will connect solar cells to motors with teacher's assistance and oversight.

Students will get to see first-hand how the energy from the sun is converted through the solar cell to power the motor when then propels the fan.
