An example of Project-Based Learning is the assignment I did for my EDSC 3250 class this semester. We had to create a PBL lesson for our future students. This was to prepare our students to understand where their families came from, why they emigrated to Utah, and what ideas they have that can show how we as a community can better support new immigrants coming to Utah. My example for my students was my fourth great grandfather John Taylor, who moved to Utah as a Mormon Pioneer, I then discussed how we can be better supporters of new immigrants immigrating to Utah

I attached an article about Problem Based Learning in history classes that made me think of how I can edit it to fit US history or Utah history instead of World History. There are so many topics in History that are up to the interpretation of the readers and sources that readers find. I could have my students learn about a specific figurehead in history (I.E. Abraham Lincoln,) and show them the events in his political career and ask them essential questions while they develop all their information. Questions could include, "Why did he say this in his speech," "Do you believe his motives at the beginning of his presidency were justified," "what was his opinion on slavery before he got elected?" Once students find the common interpretation of Lincoln I would have them defend their answer based on historical text. I would then show them the whole historical context of Lincoln's presidency and see if their interpretation of him stayed the same or changed.

The option I chose for cooperative learning is "Academic Controversy,"
I would give my students an overview of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X and also tell them how an academic controversy lesson works.
I will then break students off into pairs and give one student Malcolm X and the other Martin Luther King Jr.
Students will prepare their ‘thesis’ statement and gather evidence. They will also prepare a small presentation to give to their peers.
Each pair will present their thesis. Both students should participate. While the first group presents, the second will pay attention and take notes and vice versa. There should be no argument, discussion, or rebuttals.
After each statement has been presented, the pairs will discuss each position and offer rebuttals and explanations. This should be done in a respectful and meaningful manner.
students will next switch positions, and the pairs will be grouped up with a different pair, so they may reuse some of the arguments made in their previous discussion. The students will be given more time to prepare a new ‘thesis’ statement and gather more evidence. Students will repeat Steps 2 & 3.
Group members drop sides and create a joint statement.
Groups will then present their statement, this can be done orally, or written. This is where students will show their understanding of the topic. This is the formative assessment.
Students will discuss their findings as a class and ask clarifying questions. They will also have time to reflect on their participation in the activity. Metacognition will be encouraged.

Something I would like to do in my classes is something I had to do for one of my classes this semester. I had to conduct and interview on a fellow teacher. How I could change this to fit the narrative of History, is have my students conduct an interview with a grandparent/elder that has lived in Utah and ask them a series of questions provided by me that can expand on current events happening in our state. I can have students get an understanding of how their grandparents/parents feel about certain topics and how they felt when they were younger living in Utah. This can be a multimedia lesson where students record the interview, and present their findings to the class

Why:I want to do this assignment because it can connect students to the past history of Utah to their own personal lives, as well as help them understand issues in Today's society pertaining to immigration.
What: For this assignment I will teach the students about the mormon pioneers emigrating to Utah, then tell them they need to find the first member of their family to emigrate to Utah and do a project on them. Then add in some points on how we as a community can be more supportive for new immigrants coming to the state.
How: Students will present their posters or google slides with the class and from there I will use the rubric posted above to grade them and assess their knowledge. I will use this information to teach the subject in more depth if needed or see that they understand it well without further explanation.
