Dr. Pertuz arrives with a friendly expression, closing the door behind her. She addresses Mr. Meza.

Dr. Pertuz: Good afternoon, Mr. Pérez. I'm glad to see you. I'm Dr. Laura Gómez. Make yourself at home.

Mr. Meza: Good afternoon, Doctor. The pleasure is mine.

Dr. Pertuz: Tell me. I've briefly reviewed the reason for your appointment: a checkup and some discomfort, correct? Please tell me, what brings you here today? Take your time.

Dr. Pertuz: Yes, Doctor. The truth is, I've been experiencing a fatigue that's unusual for me. And I have some headaches that, although not serious, really interfere with my daily life.

Dr. Pertuz: I understand. It's crucial that we pay attention to these signs. It's not easy to feel constantly fatigued. To better understand the situation, could you tell me how long you've been experiencing this fatigue and if there's anything that aggravates or alleviates it?

Mr. Meza: I'd say this has been happening for about a month. At first, I thought it was due to work stress, but I've taken a few days off and it's still the same. The most noticeable thing is that it affects me more intensely after meals.

Dr. Pertuz: I understand! That familiar afternoon "heaviness." Regarding headaches, could you give me a brief description of what they feel like? Do they feel like throbbing or pressure? And how often do they occur?

Mr. Meza: It's more of a feeling of pressure in my forehead. It's not unbearable, maybe a 3 or 4 on the pain scale, but it makes me not want to do things. It happens to me about two or three times a week.

Dr. Pertuz: I appreciate your explanation, Mr. Pérez. This is very helpful. Now, changing the subject a bit, have you noticed if these symptoms have caused any other changes? For example, in your sleep pattern, if you've gained or lost weight, or if you've experienced a fever.

Mr. Meza: I sleep well, and my weight remains stable. The only thing, Doctor, is that from time to time I feel a little heartburn if I eat something very fatty.

Dr. Pertuz: Very well. With your permission, I'll proceed with a brief physical to check how you're feeling externally. Please let me know if you feel any discomfort, okay?

Dr. Pertuz performs the physical examination, maintaining eye contact and using a reassuring tone of voice.)

Dr. Pertuz: Your blood pressure is within normal ranges, and the physical examination reveals nothing alarming to the naked eye. However, to address this fatigue, I'd like to order some blood tests. This way, we can observe how your body is functioning internally.

Mr. Meza: Sounds excellent to me, Doctor. It's best to clarify all doubts.

Dr. Pertuz: I completely agree. I'll order a comprehensive exam that includes glucose, thyroid function, and a check of your immune system. With those results, we can determine precisely what's causing your fatigue and provide you with the appropriate treatment.

Mr. Meza: While I wait for the results, is there anything I can do to feel better?

Dr. Pertuz: Of course! If you need to, you can take your usual pain reliever, such as paracetamol, for your headache. However, the most essential thing right now is to focus on getting real rest—aim for 6 to 7 hours of sleep—and make sure you're well hydrated. Sometimes, fatigue can simply be due to a lack of water.

Mr. Meza: Thank you very much for your commitment, Doctor. I feel much more relaxed.

Dr. Pertuz: No need to thank me, Mr. Perez. That's my responsibility. Take good care of yourself these days, and we hope to see you soon with those results. Have a great day.

Mr. Meza: Likewise. See you next time!

REFLECTION.

In this reflection, I can see that in expressions like "It's not easy to feel tired constantly" and "It's essential that we take these signs into account," emotional validation is taking place. Furthermore, relatable language is used, with phrases like "How nice to see you!", "fatigue" (to describe tiredness after lunch), and "quite bothersome."

Empathic Transparency: The doctor clarifies the reason behind the tests ("To manage that fatigue responsibly...") and is interested in the patient's well-being ("Please let me know if you feel any discomfort"). By closing with the phrase "That's part of my job" and mentioning a follow-up appointment "at no additional cost," the doctor's commitment to the patient's health is reinforced, beyond the consultation fee.

Formal language is used that respects the professionalism required in a medical consultation (which is why it's classified as semiformal), which is excellent for conveying seriousness. Most importantly, it doesn't come across as cold or distant. The interaction is filled with warmth and empathy, as it should always be. In the end, we make the patient feel truly heard, and that's essential for effective and clear communication.

Contribution for: Luz Nery Rumbo Vidal

Hotel Reservation

Customer: Hello, good afternoon. I need to make a reservation.
Agent: Good afternoon, with pleasure. Could you please tell me the exact dates of your stay and how many people will be staying?
Customer: For two people, on October 11th, 12th, and 13th.
Agent: Very well, we do have rooms available for those dates. Would you prefer a room with a double bed or two single beds?
Customer: A double bed, please.
Agent: Perfect. I’m confirming a room with a double bed for October 11th, 12th, and 13th.
Customer: Does it include breakfast?
Agent: No, ma’am. Would you like to include it?
Customer: Yes, please.
Agent: Great. May I have your details to complete the reservation?
Customer: Martha Aguilar.
Agent: Perfect, Ms. Aguilar. Your reservation is confirmed. Can I help you with anything else?
Customer: No, thank you very much.
Agent: Goodbye, have a nice day.

Reflection:

In this hotel reservation scenario, the language used reflects a neutral register, which is appropriate for the context, as it is an interaction between a service advisor and a client. However, the advisor's language could have been more formal and professional.

The vocabulary is clear and simple, making it easy to understand. However, there were several expressions that are not appropriate for a professional setting, and a lack of precision was observed in some constructions, such as: (“no ma’am, would you like to include it?”).

Regarding the pragmatic use of language, the interaction remains respectful between the client and the advisor. The advisor shows willingness to help ( “with pleasure”, – “can I help you with anything else?”), and the client responds politely. However, the level of politeness could be improved by using more formal and standardized phrases. It is also important to follow cultural norms when addressing clients, using more universal and professional ways to request or confirm information.

In conclusion, although the dialogue fulfills its communicative purpose, the language use should be adjusted to a more formal and refined level, especially considering it is a professional interaction in a hotel service context. Improving the vocabulary, refining the grammar, and raising the level of courtesy would contribute to more effective, professional, and context-appropriate communication.

Contribution for: Mirian Fonseca Muñoz

Conversation to Make Plans with a Friend

Luisa: Hi, how are you? We haven’t gone out in a while. Would you like to do something this Saturday?
Carlos: Hi, I’m doing great, and you? Yes, I’d love to meet up.
Luisa: I’m great too. How about going to the movies?
Carlos: Want to see a horror movie? Actually, The Conjuring 4 is playing.
Luisa: No, you know I don’t like horror movies. Let’s watch something else.
Carlos: Hahaha okay, then you pick whatever you want, I’m fine with anything.
Luisa: Thanks! After the movie, shall we grab something to eat?
Carlos: Sounds great!
Luisa: Okay, see you Saturday then.
Carlos: Bye, see you Saturday.

Reflection:

In this scenario, we see an informal conversation between two friends making plans to meet up. The language is informal, which is appropriate for the context, as it is an interaction between two people who are familiar and comfortable with each other.

The vocabulary used is simple and direct—typical of a conversation between friends. Neutral expressions such as “how are you?”, “hahaha,” and “sounds great” reflect spontaneity and closeness.

Regarding the pragmatic use of language, the exchange shows courtesy and cooperation, which are characteristic of a friendly relationship. There is mutual interest in spending time together, along with negotiation and respect for each other's preferences (for example, when Luisa declines the horror movie and Carlos is fine with her choosing another one). The use of humor (“hahaha”) and relaxed language also indicate a close bond between the speakers.

In conclusion, the dialogue is appropriate for an informal context between friends. The tone is friendly and warm, and it effectively serves its purpose of coordinating a meetup. However, to achieve clearer and more polished communication, it would be advisable to correct some sentence structures and use clearer expressions. Still, within an informal register, such slips are common and understandable.

Contribution for: Mirian Fonseca Muñoz

·Interviewer: Good morning, Ms. García. Please have a seat. Can you tell me a little about yourself?

·María: Good morning. Thank you for the opportunity. My name is María García, and I recently finished my studies in English Language Teaching. I’m passionate about education and helping students communicate effectively.

·Interviewer: That’s great! What teaching methods do you prefer to use in the classroom?

·María: I like using communicative and task-based approaches. I think students learn better when they use English in real situations.

·Interviewer: Excellent. Could you describe a challenge you’ve faced as a teacher and how you solved it?

·María: Sure. Once, my students were shy to speak in English, so I started using games and short dialogues to motivate them. It helped them gain confidence.

·Interviewer: Wonderful strategy. Finally, why do you want to work with our school?

·María: Because your institution promotes bilingual education, and I’d love to contribute to that mission.

·Interviewer: Perfect. Thank you, María. We’ll contact you soon.

·María: Thank you so much for your time. Have a great day!

Reflection

This job interview scenario demonstrates a formal and professional use of English. The tone is polite and confident, which suits the context of an academic interview. Phrases such as “Thank you for the opportunity” and “I’d love to contribute to that mission” show respect and motivation. The vocabulary is appropriate and specific to teaching, including expressions like “task-based approaches” and “bilingual education.” One strength is the grammatical accuracy; the speaker uses complete and well-structured sentences. However, some answers could be expanded using connectors such as “Moreover” or “In addition” to sound more fluent. Another improvement could be to use conditional forms, for example: “If I were hired, I would focus on communicative activities.” These small changes would make the dialogue sound more natural and advanced. Practicing pronunciation of educational terms and adding linking words would enhance clarity and coherence. Overall, the dialogue effectively represents a professional interview situation and uses English appropriately for a formal context.

Suggestions and Examples

•Grammar: Replace “I like use games” with “I like using games” (correct gerund).

•Vocabulary: Change “I want this job” to “I’m interested in joining your team.”

•Structure: Add connectors like “Furthermore,” or “In addition,” to make answers flow smoothly.

•Suggestion: Practice mock interviews to improve fluency, intonation, and professional expressions.

Made by Maria Paola Garcia Perez

·Waitress: Good evening! Welcome to Bella Italia. Are you ready to order?

·Julian: Good evening. Yes, I’d like a chicken pasta, please.

·Waitress: Would you like something to drink?

·Julian: Yes, a glass of lemonade, please.

·Waitress: Perfect. Would you like any dessert today?

·Julian: Not yet, thank you. Maybe later.

·Waitress: No problem. Your order will be ready in a few minutes.

·Waitress: How was everything?

·Julian: It was delicious! Could I have the bill, please?

·Waitress: Of course. Here it is. The total is $25.

·Julian: Here you go. Thank you very much.

·Waitress: Thank you. Have a great evening!

·Julian: You too. Goodbye.

Reflection

This restaurant conversation uses polite and neutral English appropriate for a public setting. The speaker demonstrates courtesy through phrases like “Could I have…” and “Thank you very much.” The vocabulary is simple and clear, focusing on food-related expressions such as “order,” “bill,” and “dessert.” A strong aspect of this dialogue is the natural flow of interaction between customer and waiter. The conversation achieves its purpose—ordering food—effectively and politely. However, there is room for improvement in grammar and expression variety. For instance, instead of “I’d like chicken pasta,” one could say “I’d like to try the chicken pasta with cream sauce,” to sound more descriptive.

Additionally, using more advanced polite forms, such as “Would it be possible to…” could add sophistication. Practicing pronunciation of common restaurant words and intonation when expressing gratitude will make the dialogue sound more authentic. Overall, this scenario successfully reflects an everyday situation using practical English with an appropriate tone, politeness, and structure.

Suggestions and Examples

•Grammar: Replace “I want lemonade” with “I’d like a lemonade, please.”

•Vocabulary: Use “bill” instead of “the paper for pay.”

•Pragmatics: Add “Thank you for your service.” at the end to enhance politeness.

•Suggestion: Practice restaurant role-plays to improve pronunciation and confidence in real situations.

Made by: Maria Paola Garcia Perez

Professor Juan:
Good morning, everyone. Today’s topic is Artificial Intelligence and its impact on the future of work. Some people believe AI will create new opportunities, while others worry it will replace human jobs. What do you think? Let’s start with Emily.

Emily:
Well, in my opinion, AI is both a threat and an opportunity. On one hand, automation can make companies more efficient. But on the other hand, it might reduce the number of jobs for people with fewer technical skills.

Professor Juan:
That’s a good observation. Mateo, what’s your take on this?

Mateo:
I partly agree with Emma, but I think the problem isn’t AI itself—it’s how we adapt to it. New technologies always change the job market. Instead of resisting them, we should focus on education and training for future careers.

Sara:
Exactly! For example, in the past, people were afraid that computers would replace humans, but they actually created new industries like software development and digital marketing.

Daniel:
That’s true, but the difference now is the speed of change. AI is advancing so fast that workers might not have enough time to retrain. For instance, self-driving technology could replace millions of drivers in just a few years.

Emily:
That’s a fair point, Daniel. But I also think AI could create new jobs we can’t even imagine yet—like AI ethics consultants or robot maintenance experts.

Professor Juan:
Interesting idea, Emily. Sara, do you think governments should play a role in managing this transition?

Sara:
Absolutely. Governments should invest in education and create policies that protect workers. Maybe they could offer free courses or scholarships in technology fields.

Lucas:
I agree, and I’d add that companies also have a responsibility. If they use AI to make huge profits, they should also contribute to retraining their employees.

Daniel:
Yes, but not all companies can afford that. Small businesses might struggle to keep up with AI innovations. They could be left behind.

Professor Miller:
That’s an important concern. How do you think small businesses can adapt?

Emma:
Maybe by using AI tools to improve customer service or marketing, without replacing people completely. AI doesn’t have to be a threat—it can be a support tool.

Sara:
And creativity still belongs to humans. AI can analyze data, but it can’t truly innovate or understand emotions—at least not yet.

Mateo:
Right. So perhaps the future of work will be about collaboration between humans and AI, not competition.

Professor Juan:
Excellent conclusion, Lucas. It seems that most of you believe AI will change the job market dramatically, but also open up new possibilities—if we learn how to adapt.

Reflection

In the context of a university class discussion, the language used was appropriate for a semi-formal academic setting. Students shared their opinions in a clear and organized manner, making use of useful connectives such as "on the other hand," "I agree with," and "for example." These expressions facilitated a coherent flow of conversation and helped construct well-founded arguments. Furthermore, a respectful tone was maintained, demonstrating active listening and courtesy, which is essential in group discussions. Another positive aspect was the use of academic vocabulary related to the topic, such as "automation," "efficiency," "labor market," and "adaptation." This lent credibility and formality to the exchange.

However, there are some areas that could be improved. At certain points, participants could have opted for more varied or technical vocabulary to delve deeper into the topic, using terms such as “economic displacement” or “technological innovation.” It would also be beneficial to use more natural phrases for discussion, such as “That's an interesting perspective, but…” or “I'd like to add something to that point.” Grammarly, the conversation was accurate, although it could benefit from using more precise verb tenses when referring to future trends or predictions. Improving these aspects would make communication more effective, fluid, and academically sound, allowing speakers to sound more confident and persuasive during a university discussion.

Suggestions and Examples

Grammar: Use more conditional forms, e.g., “If AI continues to develop, we may face new challenges.”

Vocabulary: Include technical words such as “automation,” “innovation,” “displacement.”

Structure: Add short summaries or conclusions at the end of each argument.

Suggestion: Practice group debates to improve fluency, turn-taking, and academic vocabulary usage.

Made by Elianis Paola Luna Usme

Evelyn: Good afternoon, sir. Welcome to the Grand Sunset Hotel. How can I help you today?
Mr. Brown: Good afternoon. I have a reservation under the name Brown.
Evelyn: Let me check that for you. Yes, Mr. Brown — a double room for three nights. Is that correct?
Mr. Brown: Yes, that’s right. But I requested a room with a sea view.
Evelyn: I see. Let me check availability… I’m sorry, sir, but the sea view rooms are fully booked tonight. However, I can offer you a room with a city view and upgrade you tomorrow at no extra charge.
Mr. Brown: That sounds good. Thank you for your help.
Evelyn: You’re very welcome. Could I please see your ID and a credit card for check-in?
Mr. Brown: Of course. Here they are.
Evelyn: Perfect. Here’s your key card. Your room is on the fifth floor. The elevators are to your right.
Mr. Brown: Thank you. Could you tell me what time breakfast is served?
Evelyn: Breakfast is served from 7:00 to 10:30 in the main restaurant on the first floor.
Mr. Brown: Great, thank you very much.
Evelyn: My pleasure. If you need anything else, just dial “0” from your room phone. Enjoy your stay, Mr. Brown!
Mr. Brown: I will. Thank you and have a nice day!

Reflection

The conversation between the receptionist and the guest showcases a great example of using polite and formal English, which is crucial in customer service. The dialogue flows smoothly and professionally, highlighting effective communication and problem-solving abilities. Phrases like “How can I assist you today?”, “I’m sorry, sir, but all our sea view rooms are currently booked,” and “I can offer you a city view room and upgrade you tomorrow at no additional cost” reflect empathy, respect, and efficiency. These expressions are perfect for keeping a positive tone and ensuring the guest feels valued. The vocabulary is tailored to the hotel environment, featuring terms like reservation, check-in, upgrade, key card, and availability. The grammar and sentence structure are spot on, making the conversation easy to follow. This interaction effectively meets its goal — addressing a customer request, providing an alternative, and wrapping up the conversation on a polite note. That said, the dialogue could be enhanced by weaving in more natural and nuanced expressions of empathy and professionalism, such as “I completely understand your concern” or “We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience.” Including a bit of small talk or sharing details about hotel amenities could also make the exchange feel more genuine and welcoming. In summary, the language used is polite, clear, and fitting for a hotel context. By broadening the vocabulary and incorporating more empathetic phrases, the communication could become even more impactful and elevate the overall guest experience.

Suggestions and Examples

Grammar: Maintain consistent use of polite modal verbs — “Could I,” “Would you,” “May I.”

Vocabulary: Add expressions like “inconvenience,” “upgrade,” “complimentary service.”

Structure: Include a short farewell or offer of further help to close warmly.

Suggestion: Practice role-plays to improve tone, fluency, and natural customer service interaction.

Made By Elianis Paola Luna Usme
