It was led byGodfrey of Bouillon, Raymond of Saint-Gilles, Bohemond of Toranto and Hugh of Vermandois.<br><strong>Where?</strong> The first crusade took place in Jerusalem.<br><strong>What?</strong> The first Crusade was instigated to take back Jerusalem from the Muslims<br><strong>Why?</strong> The Christians thought that the taking back of the holy land would grant them passage into Jerusalem.</div>]]></description>

         <title>The Third Crusade </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>When? </strong>1189<br><strong>Who?</strong> The third Crusade involved Saladin Sultan of Egypt and King Richard I of England (the Lionheart), and along beside him was King Phillip II of France.<br><strong>Where?</strong> The third Crusade took place Jerusalem.<br><strong>What?</strong> There was a great deal of quarrelling between the two kings and the Crusaders failed to recapture Jerusalem.<br><strong>Why?</strong> The Egyptian and Syrian forces were ultimately unified under Saladin, who employed them to reduce the Christian states and recapture Jerusalem in 1187. Spurred by religious zeal, King Henry II of England and King Philip II of France wanted to lead the new crusade.</div>]]></description>

He took back the coastal regions of the Holy Land and negotiated a treaty that allowed Christian pilgrims to visit Jerusalem. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Saladin- Perspectives on his involvement</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Saladin's victories caused great concern in Europe and this lead directly to the third Crusade. Once capturing Jerusalem, Saladin showed tolerance and mercy to those who had conquered it. He realised that Jerusalem was a special place for Jews and Muslims alike, Saladin invited the Jewish inhabitants to return to the city. He also freed most of the Christian inhabitants after demanding a ransom for their freedom.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
