Who? The third Crusade involved Saladin Sultan of Egypt and King Richard I of England (the Lionheart), and along beside him was King Phillip II of France.
Where? The third Crusade took place Jerusalem.
What? There was a great deal of quarrelling between the two kings and the Crusaders failed to recapture Jerusalem.
Why? The Egyptian and Syrian forces were ultimately unified under Saladin, who employed them to reduce the Christian states and recapture Jerusalem in 1187. Once capturing Jerusalem, Saladin showed tolerance and mercy to those who had conquered it. He realised that Jerusalem was a special place for Jews and Muslims alike, Saladin invited the Jewish inhabitants to return to the city.
