Reflecting on my personal experience in education relating to gender, I recognize that a majority of my teachers throughout school have been female, especially in elementary school. As a student in the Faculty Education I also notice there are fewer males in my program. As I got to high school I noticed more of my teachers were male, rather than female. This may be because there are stereotypes surrounding females being more nurturing with children or better when handling situations with younger audiences.

When on placement, as well as how I interact with people in everyday life, I have made an effort to incorporate gender-inclusive language. For example, "hey folks or hi friends" rather than saying "hey guys or hey girls", as this draws students away from a particular gender. In addition, at many points in our educational journey we may experience faculty or students whom we do not know their gender identity, and are assuming, so it is best to implement neutral gender language into the classroom.

Growing up I never experienced a discussion with my teachers about gender identity or sexuality. Yet, when I got to my prac my host teacher had a big classroom discussion about gender roles, gender fluidity etc. The students felt so heard during the discussion and asked plenty of questions that were so respectful and insightful. It truly was a great discussion to experience and definitely one I would love to have with my future students.
