In Harlem, his black nationalism became popular. He argued that blacks should go back to Africa and develop their own society. After achieving a successful following, Garvey was sent to jail then deported back to Jamaica.

The Harlem Renaissance was a social, intellectual, and artistic surge in the African American community. This movement was to prove that African American culture is just as important and valid. The Great Migration contributed to the renaissance, as many African Americans moved north in order to work. Langston Hughes, Marcus Garvey, and Duke Ellington were several of many important influences during the Renaissance. The Renaissance was important because it inspired blacks to take pride in their culture and to take civil rights for themselves.

Flappers

Flappers were women in the 20's that went against stereotypes. Women were expected to dress and act modestly, to be seen and not heard. In the 20's that changed when women started wearing shorter dresses, smoking, drinking, and partying alongside men. They also practiced the same sexual freedom that men had. After men left for the war, women joined the workforce and believed that women should have equal rights since they are able to work men's jobs. After the passage of the 19th Amendment, the number of flappers grew. Flappers were important because it allowed women to gain freedom previously unheard or practiced before.

Scopes Trial

Also known as the "monkey trial" the Scopes Trial took place in Dayton, Tennessee in 1925. John Scopes was a teacher who had taught the theory of evolution. Teaching the theory had been outlawed by the Butler Act. The Act had been supported by many because the theory of evolution had went against the bible. As a small town, Dayton remained very religious and disliked Scopes who had "threatened" their children with the teaching. Dayton was found guilty and found $100. The trial was important because it brought forth the idea that religion and science were supposed to be separate and it challenged religion and showed many that science is important to life.

The Cotton Club is located in Harlem New York and was a hot-spot during the Harlem Renaissance. Many Harlem entertainers would perform here and entertain black and white audiences. Entertainers like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington would perform here singing jazz and blues. It allowed the Harlem Renaissance to flourish and for culture to expand. Some white audiences would be exposed to their culture and realize that they should be supported and not segregated. This club was important because it also allowed black nationalism and culture to flow and be supported.
