         <description><![CDATA[<p>During this time parents were teaching their children at home, practical things like basic reading and life and work skills. Children used slates and chalkboards as well as early paper but also did many things by hands. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>People who were strongly associated with the church still taught kids however students were taught ideas of freedom and liberty with religion not being as integrated into them.  Schoolhouses for different levels of education were being built as well as libraries. Students did hands-on work but also started moving towards books and reading as well as learning other languages.</p>]]></description>

         <title>Common School Period 1840-1880</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Historic events like the gold rush and freeing of slaves were added to history. Common schools were built, teachers were finally being paid and were moving away from the church.  Basic paper and pencil started to become common with students and simple problem solving was prioritized. </p>]]></description>

         <title>The Progressive Period 1880-1920</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Children during this time were busy with work until child labor laws came in and let kids go back into education. Teachers were considered professional and got better pay. Segregation led to all-black and all-white schools. American history was pushed the same with science and math with paper and pencil work.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>During this time schools and teachers' funds were being cut which led to a decrease of teachers and closures of schools. Only basic subjects were being taught because kids had to work. The government had to step in and give funds to keep schools running. More Paper and pencil as well as bookworm.  Schools were a lot bigger. </p>]]></description>
