Survey says….  The results are in!

 Thank you to everyone that replied to last week’s email about what works best for them to work with focus and engagement! I had so many good responses! I’ll try to summarize!  Many students commented that working later in the day or even when it’s dark is helpful, many also stated that music helped-but stipulated “quiet” music ( and one said really loud music!), other students  just wanted it quiet, but some wanted family or other company in the room, like pets. Some wanted to work after a meal or with a snack. Staying calm and using fidget devices were mentioned.  The “later in the day workers” mentioned this was calming and helped quiet their minds, and another big group mentioned they liked to work in the morning to focus, so they could relax later! Walking around, going outside or playing with the dog a bit to stay relaxed or taking breaks works for some. Letting go of earlier in the day stressors was mentioned.

 Some study habits that were mentioned were: consistency, tunnel vision while working, visual learning and repeating, good time management, organization, always stay ahead and don’t get behind.

 One student said, “ I'd have to say that to me, "work with focus and engagement" means to really absorb what you are doing and take it all in. It is one thing to read over/skim through your work, and another thing entirely to comprehend while doing so.

 A HUGE thank you to everyone that responded…I think I do ALL of these things at different times (even listen to really loud music in the afternoons-sometimes!) It’s important to know what works for you and maybe you can try some tips that people mentioned here.  Keep working and breathing and focusing, and I look forward to your next submission!

It's good to hear from you.  You asked a very good question [use of literal meaning or modern use]. It's also great that you're thinking ahead.  Although you're referring to a non-graded practice activity, you noticed that the activity will show up later as a graded activity.

When one uses Latin phrases or key words in one's own writing, it usually is smart to incorporate a clue for a non-Latin reader which hints at what the word or phrase means. That's what a "context clue" is.  It's a synonym or a situation that lets a reader know what a "big word or unknown phrase" [here a Latin expression] means. The context clue isn't an outright definition because the sentence or paragraph you write that uses the expression is part of a story.  An outright definition interrupts or destroys the storyline. 

You mentioned "alma mater" as an example.  A non-Latin person wouldn't know that the expression literally means a "kind/indulgent mother".  So, it's best to use the more modern thinking of the phrase - place of one's primary/first college degree.  The synonym/clue might be "college," or it might be a reference to one's "place for his/her undergraduate degree".  Remember, the idea is to provide a context clue along with actually using the Latin word/expression in good grammatical context.  "Alma Mater" references a place/a noun. So, don't use it as an adjective or verb, for example.

Ex:

"For my 10^th college reunion, I went back to Evanston, Illinois and my "alma mater" for the weekend.  It was great to see my old college friends again and attend another homecoming football game."  

Sometimes it takes 2-3 sentences to provide enough of a story to create a good context clue for a key word or phrase.

So, to answer your question, go with the modern usage in mind.  But remember you want to drop a hint or two as context clues to help the reader who doesn't know Latin or doesn't know the expression you're using.

In German we need to adjust verb endings to match the subject we are using....If we say I go vs He goes...we adjust in English too for the "he/she" form.  I walk....he walks, we just add -s

In German there are more endings to know.

for the verb to go-gehen  for example: 

For an "ich" (I) sentence a regular verb will have -e   Ich gehe.   I go.

For a "du" (you/singualar) sentence, the verb will have -st   Du gehst.  You go.

er/sie/es (he,she,it)  -t    Er geht. He goes.

wir (we) -en   Wir gehen.  We go.

ihr (you'all) -t Ihr geht . You all go. 

sie (they) -en Sie gehen.  They go.

Sie (formal person that you say "you" to) -en  Sie gehen.  You go.

so from here you can make many good sentences....I go to school.  Ich gehe zur Schule.  He goes to school  Er geht zur Schule.  We go on Monday.  Wir gehen am Montag.  Notice how the verb ending changes every time I change my subject of the sentence.

I just wanted to make sure you understood that the overall grade you have is the average from all the assignments you've turned in. That grade for you is 99.1%! That's awesome!! However, the actual grade value takes into account all the assignments that have NOT been completed, which is just 82.5%. I for one would love to see that overall grade be the one you finish the semester with. You just have to devote more time in the course every day/week to make it happen.

Thank you for your email and I'd love to answer your questions. I've included Ms. Isom on the email, Jay's mentor, since some of the questions would be better answered from the school.

• Since Jay will be running down to the wire, what is the cut-off time next week? Midnight on Friday? - Correct. Work must be submitted by 11:59pm on Friday 12/8. 

  
  

• Are there options for credit for any late work after the 8th? Anything submitted after 11:59 cannot be accepted.

• Jay tells me that all he can see in the course is percentage completion. Do you have anything you can share with us that breaks down the assignments for the term or at least those remaining for completion? I think it would be helpful for Jay to be able to see that to help quantify time needed to invest in completion of the course. Yes. I have attached Jay's Course Report. This is a .pdf in Jay's course that he can also download. It is a "living" document and will update each time Jay downloads it. Jay can also see the whole course schedule laid out on the Course Map page. Instead of clicking, "Next Activity", Jay can click the small blue circle. This will open the Course Map. I have a photo below. In my weekly progress reports, I list a goal of minimum percentage to complete each week in order to finish the course on time. Some quick math options: Jay currently has 38% complete. With an end date of 12/8, that gives 10 working days remaining. Jay has 62% of the course left, so that would be a daily goal of completing at least 6.2% of the course. My advice is every morning write down the percentage complete. Add 6% to that number, by the end of the day, have at least that much finished. Ex. Today 11/29 currently 38% done, by the end of day Jay should have at least 44% done. Jay can work more some days, or on weekends if need be. As far as time, I'm not able to provide how much time to work daily as some days will have tests and other days may be more review. I would plan for it to be a few hours of daily work. Best practice is to work for 45-60 minutes and then get up and take a break. I would do this a few times each day. Or if Jay has a few minutes, he could hop online and do a couple activities. Short bursts of work can really add up quickly and make for a lot of progress without feeling so overwhelming.

  
  

• Do you have any tips based on past experience with other students who fall behind that have helped them push through? Best practice is to work for 45-60 minutes and then get up and take a break. I would do this a few times each day. Or if Jay has a few minutes, he could hop online and do a couple activities. Short bursts of work can really add up quickly and make for a lot of progress without feeling so overwhelming. Jay can even multitask if he is working on the review games. He can hang on the couch and watch tv while playing the review games, work on it in the car, complete the activities together with a family member etc. It doesn't have to be a secluding, sit in front of a computer for hours task. Often students will play on a cell phone or scroll social media while doing other things. That time can really add up and if Jay swaps some of those activities for working on Spanish, he will make some solid progress.

  
  

  • We're working on teaching Jay to chunk his time and reward himself with time spent in other rewarding activities in between and using others for accountability, but we're open to other suggestions as well. - I love this! Chunking and lots of short bursts of work is key to success!

"did" in Spanish does not exist. The word "did" is implied with the preterite tense. I'm okay with you using your notes on assignments. Double check with your school, of course.

I am learning = a tense called the present progressive. You use the verb estar and the second verb is -ando/-iendo. Ex. Yo estoy aprendiendo longboard. Thanks a bunch! Mrs. B

You have a retake available on both of your unit tests. Currently you have scores of 68% and 72%. If you can raise those scores a combined 20 points it will be enough to bring your final grade to a 70%, instead of the 67% it currently is. Think of it this way:

Adding your scores together you get 140. You need to bring that up to 160. It doesn't matter in which order, if you retake the test with a score of 68 and it becomes an 88 or higher, you are good to go, you just need another 20 points.

You can also redo the performance task. Your current score on that is an 8%. Raising your performance task score to 68% or higher will also bring your final grade up to a 70%.

As we enter the new semester, think about your final goal.  Of course, you want all of the skills that 7^th grade math offers so that you can succeed in future math classes and in real life math situations. But also put some thought into your actual number grade goal.  Remember the two semesters will be averaged.  So, if you had an 68% first semester and want to close the year with a grade in the 80% range, you’ll need to earn at least a 91%, in order to get an 80%.  I REALLY believe that grades are NOT our goals, but mastery of the skills are most important, but I do know that they matter, so take a minute to think about where you are headed.

As we enter second semester German I have a few suggestions.  The best way to do your work is to use your basic skills that you have used often.  This is obviously better than using an outside source to get vocab and structure, it is also faster and a better use of your time.  If you stay with basic subject +verb structure and your own memorized vocab, you usually can prepare a good answer to submit.  We are looking for a subject +verb word order,  a verb ending to match the subject and one or two words to finish the sentence. 

Ich spiele Tennis.  Or add a day…Ich spiele am Montag Tennis.  Ich spiele Tennis und Fußball. Add an “and” to make it longer….or a with whom or where….Ich spiele mit John Tennis.  Ich spiele in der Schule Fußball.

I’ve attached a grammar sheet with the verb endings at the top and as we move into helping verbs, those are at the bottom.  Also a good review for German 2 students.

To start off yes, your student is taking an online class, at their school.  How the course works, during your student’s class period at Raytown schools, they are to take out their chrome books and log into their online class.  To log in, all your student needs to do, is to use their school laptop and log in, there will be an icon on the home screen called (clever) and they are in.  Currently there is a long-term sub that is with them during this time.  

Every day, they are to log into their online class and complete one lesson.  A lesson usually follows this ( a short video on new science content, an assignment, and last a quiz) Sometimes there is a lab, project, or a test.  They need to complete at least 1 lesson a day.  

Lastly, you will receive an email from me weekly informing both you and your student of their progress.  I will send out their grade, and if they are on track to finish the class on time, this will be done as a percent.  If your student is 3% behind, this means that they are about 2-3 lessons behind.  

The great thing about online classes, is that anywhere you have internet, you can work.  Here is the first progress email.

Maybe you noticed that one country had a very short revolutionary time, while the other 2 countries were long and drawn out.

I see that you're coming up on the sonnet-writing assignment. A lot of students come up with beautiful poems for this assignment, but most of them are not sonnets. They have very specific guidelines. Let me help you before you try on your own.

The rules for a sonnet are that they use iambic pentameter and an ABAB CDCD EFEF GG rhyme scheme. Iambic pentameter sounds like duh DUH, duh DUH, duh DUH, duh DUH, duh DUH. If you need more help, you can look at examples online and ask me. Make sure your topic is something personal to you.

I also want to help you bring up your overall grade so here is an assignment you will get to soon.  Here are some helps for the Explore Products assignment coming up.  You will read a short Spanish paragraph. 

Es means “is” in Spanish.  Son means “are”.  Se usa- means “wears”.    Some words are very similar in English like decoración is decoration.  Artículos means articles. Ropa is clothing.  Based on those words see if you can read through this and understand most of it.  Re-read it a few times.  You may also look up a few more words with an online Spanish dictionary but try not to just translate the whole thing online, so you can learn as you go.  Then, you answer the questions.  

#1 and 2 you will use the same verb in the answer (es- #1 and se viste #2). 

 #3 you can find the 5 aspects of the huipil in the paragraph.  

#4 is asking for your opinion about it.  You can choose a simple sentence like El huipil es.. and a Spanish adjective to describe it.  

#5 is asking why you think it’s important that these women wear traditional clothing.  All of this should be answered in Spanish!  You’ve got this!  Email me if you need more help.

1. This is short answer response, meaning they need more than a few sentence, but less than 5 paragraph essay.  I good plan is a paragraph for each part of the question. 

2. You need to write in complete sentences, this means for a bare minimum, you need a capitol at the start of each sentence and for proper nouns, and you need proper punctuation at the end of each sentence.

3. There are usually two parts or more to each questions, to fully answer each part, you will need at least 1 paragraph for each part.  Many of these will have you reference either the readings or the lessons to back up your writing, you will need to pull a sentence from the reading or lesson and copy it in your response as evidence to back up your writing.  Make sure you properly cite this copied sentences,  there are two ways to do this, put the sentence in " ___", or start the sentence with according to the lesson/ reading....

I'm happy to see that you're showing more progress in English and that your end date has been extended. I see that you're about ready to write your essay on a time you were judged. Here's some advice I've given others for this assignment: You need to make sure to address the prompt which is to tell about a time you, yourself, were judged like MLK was. It doesn't have to be about race. It can be anything... like judgment by a teacher, friend, acquaintance, coach, boss, parent, etc. It should be 5 paragraphs. You could write the first paragraph about the judgment of MLK, ending the paragraph with the fact that you understand, since you have also faced judgment. Then the next three body paragraphs could tell your story, tell your reaction to it, and tell how it affected you for better or worse. The 5th paragraph could tie it all up with a short summary and lesson/theme/message.

You can write about any kind of judgment.... your outfit, your friends, a love interest, something you did wrong, something you were ACCUSED of doing wrong, a contest, showing livestock, a sporting event, something your parents didn't approve of... anything like this. Follow the prompt to write a 5-paragraph essay about it. If you need more clarification, let me know.

For Business Ventures - Part II, you create a PowerPoint presentation that addresses the following:

• Create a Power Point presentation or a chart showing how supply and demand, scarcity, and economic measurement affect the legal form of business you chose, as well as the costs associated with your business.

Pick a business you would like to run.  Create a title slide, then a slide showing a supply and demand chart (you can take a screenshot of one and insert it into the presentation).  What products are in demand, and how does supply effect the price?  Next would be a slide addressing scarcity of product, and how it impacts demand.  Next, address the legal form of business (corporation, LLC, Sole Proprietorship) that you would choose for this business and why.  Ideally, address how this choice helps with the issues you addressed in the previous slides.

We celebrate Pi Day on March 14 (3.14) indicating our irrational love of this amazing number. See what I did there? How Can You Track Your Sleep Quantity and Quality?

Required Materials

• Word processing software

You learned about sleep in this unit, and now it’s time to apply that knowledge to your own life.

Step 1: Track Your Sleep

Track the quality and quantity of your sleep for one week. Gather enough information to help you answer these questions:

• For each night, what time (or times) did you go to bed, and what time (or times) did you get out of bed? What was your sleep cycle, and did it match the one you learned about in the unit?

• Review what you learned in the unit about states and levels of consciousness. For each night, which of these states and levels did you experience? When was your consciousness explicit, and when was it implicit?

• Review what you learned about how an individual interacts with their environment can affect sensation and perception. How did your environment (your sleeping area) and your qualities as an individual (your mood or attitude, for example) affect what you sensed and perceived?

• For each night, how did you feel when you went to bed? How did you feel when you woke up? Can you remember whether you dreamed?

• As far as you can tell, how did the amount and quality of your sleep affect your behavior?

• As far as you can tell, how did the amount and quality of your sleep affect your learning?

• Sum up your quality and quantity of sleep for the week. Based on what you learned, do you believe your circadian rhythm is in sync or out of sync? Why?

If you have a fitness tracker or sleep app, you may also be able to track your heart rate or your periods of restlessness as you sleep. This can be helpful information, but you don’t need to have it to do well on this assignment.

Step 2: Present Your Results

Create a document that showcases the questions you answered in Step 1. Your document can take any one of these formats:

• A series of diary entries

• A chart, table, or spreadsheet

• A series of annotated graphs (either hand-drawn or made with software)

From looking back at your work so far this semester, you tend to work on my class on weekdays and typically during the mornings.  As you entered about your 11^th week in my class, you started to slow down on your activity in my class.  This can happen sometimes as students get deep into a semester, especially when students are juggling various activities like you are with your after-school job.  I know that you Financial Math is a meaningful course for you because it is required for you to graduate.  I would love to offer you an opportunity to help you get back on track with your pacing (right now you are 20% behind).   If you complete the lessons below by the end of this school week (the end of the day on April 6^th), I will add 5 points to your lowest test score AND excuse you from one future assignment!

The assignment was submitted but was not completed.  Remember with the Health course, when you are working on the documents you must save your work before you submit it into the course.  I have attached the file here so you can redo the asssignment and then either submit it in the course or email it to me.

With the eclipse almost here, I had to take a moment to send you some math facts.

Ever wonder how the Moon can block out the entire Sun? Mathematically, of course! Imagine this: If you stand 50 yards away from a tree and take a picture, then move back another 50 yards and take another picture of that same tree, the second image will make the tree look half as tall. This is the mathematics of perspective, or relative size.

The diameter of the Sun is roughly 400 times the diameter of our Moon. This means for the Moon to appear as large as the Sun, the distance from Earth to the Sun needs to be at least 400 times larger than the distance from Earth to our Moon. Today, the distance to the Sun is roughly 422 times larger than the distance to the Moon!

And there is your fun math facts about eclipses. If you are planning on watching the eclipse, make sure you have the correct equipment. Stay safe!
